Fa Mulan + Ping .Realistic. by dwightyoakamfan Fa Mulan + Ping .Realistic. by dwightyoakamfan
- drawn in paint tool sai and fixed up on gimp 2.6 -

Drawing I did of the beautiful Fa Mulan, and her alias and male identity, Ping. I did my best to make her look realistic, Chinese and of course, resemble her character(s) in the movie.

I didn't use any one reference photo, it was a complete composition, I used various caps from the movie to get her facial features right (in both the 'male' and female drawings).

Comments and Critique are greatly appreciated and welcomed! <3

Looks lovely, you weren't afraid to add some masculine features.

Not bad, for lack of a reference photo.  Reminds me of the exchange student that used to live with my family, but taller and leaner.

I sincerely hope this does not offend anyone or anything.

The eyes are a little widely spaced--and that's a good thing!  Great proportions overall.

Nose shape is good, lips are good, hair is good, fabric texture is great, shadows are great.

But as a Chinese American art student, I have to say that her eye shape isn't long enough.  I say this from personal experience--I've had to draw/paint at least five different self-portraits in the past year or so, and had to study similar faces as well.

Once again, I hope this doesn't offend.  Also, I hope you read this it unwanted?

I just wanted to let you know that in Chinese culture, if you have a portrait with a person (or two people) with their names next to it, it means that it is a picture of a person(s) who is dead.  Basically, it's like a memorial picture or something you would put in a funeral.  I'm Chinese American, so my parents have told me not to draw things like that with Chinese people.

Hope that helps!

This is a very beautiful portrait. This is a soft vulnerability to them. Very exquisite work.

I love how she is still recognisable, but with just a slight alteration she suddenly looks masculine. Well done!

This is great, you captured her in a realistic sense well! I really like the shadows around the eyes, nice hatching/shading. The open mouth detail with the teeth adds another aspect of realism I can't quite describe - it works well.

Sorry about her eyes! SHYe had a really small nose and that ended up making her eyes look further apart... but at least it's closer to mulan LOL

Thank you <3

dwightyoakamfan Featured By Owner Jun 22, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
LOL. I do admit I am partial to a large eyebrows on females; but at least this time I had an excuse as Disney's Mulan's eyebrows are actually quite large already! XD

Thank you very much that is quite the compliment <3
