With limited ease
Through the crevasse
And though he had,
That he’d been alone
It was only now, in this
That he realized his fears had come to fruition
His suspicion confirmed
Upon further inspection
He noticed the mouths of several tunnels
Each branching in a different direction
And after brief reflection
Of the journey so far
Jagged stones protruded into his path
But did little to delay his intrusion.
He pushed further into the darkness
Until he had to struggle just to see his hands before his face.
The momentary descent ached
With every fiber of his being,
He had been falling for hours, only to end with an abrupt
He found himself in an incredible abyss
Only made discernible
By a singular glow
Emitted by an orb that hung,
In the center of the cavern.
Through great effort he climbed
To his feet.
Entranced by the glow
Helpless to its power
He proceeded with a vagrant disregard
His safety was of no consequence.
Every step pained him,
Yet he pushed on.
Began to perspire from his temples
As he became stricken with a
That only accentuated his
He was so close.
With an incredible strain,
He reached for the orb.
With every centimeter closer he advanced
His hands burned.
Hotter than any fire he could ever fathom.
He achieved his desire.
And everything he had ever known
