GRELL SUTCLIFF IS A WOMAN by dweebzilla GRELL SUTCLIFF IS A WOMAN by dweebzilla
THIS IS THE CHARACTER CONFESSIONAL WRITTEN BY YANA TOBOSO, CREATOR OF BLACK BUTLER. GRELL IS REFERRED TO AS A WOMAN, REFERS TO HERSELF AS A WOMAN, AND EXPRESSES A DESIRE TO HAVE A SEX CHANGE WHICH IS LIKELY NOT POSSIBLE IN THE TIMEFRAME OF THE MANGA.

YOU ARE TO USE FEMALE FUCKING PRONOUNS WHEN REFERRING TO GRELL BECAUSE SHE IS A FUCKING TRANS*WOMAN, OKAY? SHE'S NOT A FLAMBOYANT GAY MAN. SHE'S A WOMAN. REFERRING TO HER AS MALE IS RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL AND HIGHLY OFFENSIVE. SHE'S NOT A FUCKING MAN. GOT IT?

Grell is a Japanese parody stereotype of gay men called おかま and he doesn't identify as a woman, he merely plays the role of a woman by using onee-kotoba. The Japanese original of this confessional refers to Grell as a man, what you have here is false fan translation. Yana-san herself refers to Grell as a man and uses male pronouns for him. All this "grell is a woman uwu" is raisin picking at its finest because you ignore everything else Grell has said about himself. In Japanese, Grell doesn't even refer to himself as a woman, he just uses onee-kotoba to sound cute and more alluring to get his hands into men's pants.

Stop ignoring what Yana-san said about Grell personally. She never confirmed he's trans and sees him as a gay man. Let otherpeople see Grell however they want. End of story.

"she doesn't refer to herself as a girl in japanese, she just uses a highly gendered form of speech that literally translates to "women's words" and pines about not having a female body and reproductive organs because she's a highly offensive and transphobic gay stereotype!!1"

That speech is called oneekotoba and a speech pattern that isn't particularly used by women, but more by young girls to sound cute, as well as gay men who live and work as okama.

Also the entire confessional wasn't even written by Yana herself. Check your facts before raging about a culture specific stereotype you obviously has no clue about what it is.

I just watched Black Butler and I've been so confused on whether I should call Grell a he or she. So after reading this, I now know more about Grell! But I think the reason why some people call Grell a he is because some characters call him a he. While she herself uses female pronouns. Because of this, half of the fandom uses male pronouns while the other half uses female pronouns for Grell.

I'm not gonna lie, I feel like calling Grell a she weird since the whole transgender thing is new to me, and like the person below I can't seem to call someone whatever pronouns they use unless they did a sex change. Also don't forget some people didn't grow up with LGBT people, so things like this can be hard to adapt. However I'm willing to change slowly after adapting to different LGBT characters I've been through, and honestly I'm switching pronouns for Grell. Wouldn't Grell be biromantic transsexual? Grell crushed on both girls and guys, but refers herself a female yet hasn't undergo a sex change.

In my opinion, I think Grell might be pangender. Grell can be known as a he, she, they or even it depending how you wanna call her.

I think,Biologicaly,He's dominantly male, but might posess a female reprodictive organ, yet Ovaries are connected to his male systems.
Sorry, but my thoughts, but, overtime he became emotionally insecure of his dominant gender, therefore, being the Grell we know now.
It makes sense to me.

LMAO why bother to reply in a very old comment?

Well that's your opinion, and I wouldn't go against it since everyone has different ways of portraying and seeing Grell.

As someone who has a friend that's transgender, I'm more open to the idea that Grell is a she, unlike my past self a year ago where I was still hesitant to call Grell a "she." Like I stated it just takes time to get used to. : P

grell identifies herself as a woman, and you always go by how someone self-identifies, regardless of what others call them, where they are in their transition, or if they choose to transition at all. "transsexual:" is not the correct term to use, and grell would be bisexual, because being transgender has nothing to do with sexual orientation! it's just how you identify your own gender.

the concept of a "sex change" is outdated because a person's gender is not determined by their genitalia! some trans people don't even want to, or unable, to transition, due to various circumstances, and they're as much their gender as someone who's had sex reassignment surgery ("sex change") and hormone therapy!

also, how would you know if a person had undergone SRS anyway unless they told you or you had sex with them? why does it matter what's in their pants unless you plan on interacting with them in that manner? always respect a person's identity!

I guess you're right in some ways, I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable lol

But there is one thing I would like to confirm...I've been very confused with the difference between transsexual and transgender. People have been telling that a transsexual is someone who basically acts like the opposite gender, while transgender is one who already did the surgery..I even got other LGBT people to confirm this, thus is why I used that term. Sorry if it offended u or something but I hope you can understand why I mistook that word.

And yeah, that is true, some people can't afford surgery. We should just respect what they want to be called, regardless if they can get a sex change.

But just personal opinion here, I think the reason why some people call Grell a he is because they're not used to transgender people. As a person who grew up in an anti-LGBT environment I can understand this. It wasn't until I had a lesbian-transgender friend that I changed my opinion. My friend, who was born with female genitals, didn't mind if I continue calling her a she because she knows I'm still not completely comfortable but in exchange, I'm now calling her James, the name she always wanted to be called as, and no one else but me calls her James. it's still a progress, but better than nothing right? Some people will need time to change and accept different sexuality and gender, and I'm slowly getting into the acceptance part. I'm sure one day I'll be able to call my friend a he.

I understand if you are upset that people insult the transgender, as I assume you're trans too? So I want to apologize if anything I said earlier hurts you, but really, I'm trying my best to understand since I'm Asexual; and being around people who always wants romance, they'll never understand me either. Some even insulted me for not having a kiss or a boyfriend/girlfriend for my age; I'm nearly an adult. Yet I don't blame them. Sometimes it's better to have them experience it themselves through LGBT friends/relatives or at least explain to them politely about your situation and if they are good people who are willing to change, they will listen. ^u^

"transsexual" is an outdated term for someone who has had sex reassignment surgery, otherwise known as a "sex change". someone who is "transgender" identifies as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth- for example, your friend is transgender because he identifies as male but was assigned female at birth.

i am indeed trans myself, and i understand you're coming from a place of ignorance rather than malice, so don't worry about it!

OH so that's what they meant, wow, so basically I mixed the terms up xD
I thought transsexual was the one that defines a person that identifies the opposite gender, while transgender is the term for the "sex change" thing. Thanks for the correction.

I see, that's interesting! I used to call Grell a he but by episode 17-18 of Black Butler I changed it to she; then I saw this and I'm like, oh that's cool, Grell calls herself a lady. x)

you may say Grell is a woman but in reality if someone were to remove the pants, you'd find a penis and testicles. a Trans-woman want to be referred as a woman but they were born male. To me until the sex change happens, he's still a he. I have been friends with Trans-women and they have all said the same thing, they are still officially male regardless in what they want others to refer them as.

In any case, at least this does put into perspective in what Grell really wants. In today's society it'd be very easy to call 'her' want 'she' wants but back in 1888... unheard of...

Thank you for posting this. :)

If it ever comes out that Grell gets a sex change, I will surely refer 'her' as a she

honestly i know you're trying to be respectful but this is super fucking transphobic and as a trans man who doesn't plan on getting surgery due to issues that run in my family you can fuck right off with this cisnormative bullshit. a trans person is the gender they identify, genitals don't mean a fucking thing. i am a man despite my genitalia and grell is a woman despite hers.

I don't mean you no disrespect. I have friends who are like that and yes they prefer to be called by the sex they wish they were but they will also tell me they were born the opposite sex they want to be. I have a friend on facebook who called himself a she but she also openly admitted to me they are male. The person I was referring to before 'he' as he likes to be called, I used to babysit for when he was a she. We lost touched after graduation. 10 years he was still a she and even caught the bouquet at my wedding. It was only less than 5 years ago that she decided to become a he and since I barely talk to the person, I'm still in the situation of getting used to the idea. If he had been open with me from get go instead of closing himself off to everyone he grew up with, I wouldn't feel so conflicted

i really don't care how many of your friends are trans, that doesn't shield you from being transphobic, and it's actually being made worse by the fact that you're outright misgendering and disrespecting those friends by misgendering them- something that is a literal act of violence against trans people. we don't "want" to be a gender, we ARE that gender, and if you keep arguing with me about this, i will block you. i do not stand for any kind of transphobia.

because she's not physically female and the other characters refer to her with male pronouns. it's such a weak argument- ALWAYS go by what the person refers to themselves as, NEVER what others say.
