i havent posted here in a while, but i really dont know where else to talk about this. I met francis001
on deviant art years ago, we bonded over our love of the arts, and once in a while, cars.

Life, over time took me away from here, but we kept in touch over facebook, eventually, again, family and day to day life obligations took me away from that as well and i fell out of touch with Francis, but i knew his condition had progressed further. One time we chatted briefly over facebook, and i knew he was typing using his eye movement. i did not know if i wanted to put a strain on him more than he already had, but i knew Francis was not the type that would let something like that keep him from living. even if it was just keeping in touch with friends. I now feel very regretful, for letting work get in the way of keeping the company of friends.

He was.. insanely talented. Looking at the quality of the work he's done, it's easy to say he's reached a level of skill in his short lived life, that many of us would require a lifetime to achieve. I respected him greatly, over the years, i looked forward to any comments i could get on my artwork from him, it was immensely flattering to have such an artist comment on your work, even if it was just a quick " COOL!" on your page.

Francis was not just an amazing artist driven by his love of drawing, but he was an amazing person altogether. Any lesser artist would probably have given up after falling into such a disease, say " fuck it", maybe just sit around, get bitter and complain a lot. not Francis, he drew until the end, and he loved it.

Francis was ALWAYS upbeat anytime i heard from him, when he couldnt draw with his hands anymore, he learned to draw with his feet, when his feet were no longer was responsive, he trained himself to draw digitally using his eye movement.

i apologize if this entry is sparse, out of order, and just disorganized ramblings. I just found out less than an hour ago that Francis has passed away, and my heart is still heavy with grief. If you've no idea what i am tlakign about, or who, it's okay. please visit this link to find out more kotaku.com/rip-francis-tsai-16… I shoudl probably have waited until morning, maybe afternoon to gather my thoughts and type up a better entry. but hey, fuck it. why wait for anything. Life's too short to sleep on it.

rest in peace Francis.

Mr. Nguyen,
I am truly sorry for the loss of your dear friend, you have my sincerest condolences.
His passion for art was truly admirable, and all of us here at DeviantArt will miss him.
An artist until the very end-no better way to go out.

Rest in peace, I was about to order his book from amazon, I followed his work for a while FRANCIS001 was a username to look for in my deviant watch, then noticed changes on his style and I later found about his condition and admired his incredible determination, great spirit and unstoppable love for art. He was an example to us all.

well said, bud. It's men like Francis that can show the rest of us what it means to push forward under any circumstance. Any complaining I do can be swiftly put into check when see artists such as Francis. I looked forward to new work from him, he will be missed.

I remember reading an article about him a few months ago. I was equally impressed by the technology that allowed him to draw and by his tremendous mental strength. And then the realisation that we still don't have a cure hit...
I didn't know him but I know he was a great man. It's terrible to hear about his passing. Rest in peace.

 It's such as news and the world is less for a lack of his amazing, creative, unique take on things. He will be missed.

I remember hearing about Francis some time ago. It is truly amazing what that man accomplished being diagnosed with that unwanted crap no one deserves to have.

When I read the title of this journal I kind of forgot his name since it has been a while since I followed up on him, but his name immediately made me think "Isn't that the artist with ALS and is doing art with his eyes?" Sure enough I looked him up real fast and it was indeed him. I'm glad a part of me remembered who he was, but it is sad that he left this world. My prayers go out to his family, friends, and anyone who got to meet him who were inspired by his work. Rest easy buddy

He was an incredible talent and an incredible person from your description. But don't beat yourself up for getting swept up in life--that's just what happens, and from how you describe him, it doesn't sound like he would hold it against you. But grief will do that, that I understand too well. Let yourself grieve a bit, then try to follow the example he lived by. It is the best tribute we can pay to those who depart before us.
