My Bio
Duncan Long has created fanciful illustrations for books and magazines, including the cover for HarperCollins’ Digital Art for the 21st Century -- later singled out in the “Editor's Choice” column of Locus Magazine and proclaimed “a handsome cover”.

Long’s cover art appears on novels from PS Publishing, iBooks, Pocket Books, Delirium Books, Ballistic Media, Swimming Kangaroo, and others, and he has created the technical drawings for the 70-plus non-fiction books he’s also authored.

Talk-show host Victor Thorn proclaimed Long as one of the three “best graphic artists in the entire world.”

Long also writes novels, and has seen thirteen of his science fiction and action-adventure books published by HarperCollins and Avon Books.

Note from the artist: Due to copyright considerations, I am placing only a few of my illustrations at deviantArt -- at least until the organization changes their options clauses to more-fully protect copyright holders. I do have much more of my artwork (and short stories, music, and articles) online at my web site, DuncanLong.com.

I'm not normally a big celebrator of Halloween (funny face notwithstanding), but in keeping with the holiday season, I’m offering a free PDF download of my newly illustrated Edgar Allan Poe classic, “The Raven” (which I illustrated and laid out this last week). Careful, the virtual ink’s still wet. Download info is at: my blog:  http://duncanlong.com/blog/?p=185 In addition to new illustrations for the poem, I created a typeface as well. And added a slight twist on the ending of the poem with the addition of a "different" picture of Lenore (hopefully Poe isn't spinning in his grave). IMPORTANT: I’ll be removing the

Time is money — and you can also live a lot more life if you don't waste large chunks of it. And a lot of time can be wasted on a computer. No, I don't mean surfing and such (though if the shoe fits...), but rather squandered time lost through extra keystrokes and needless mouse gestures that may be just a few seconds lost here and there, but which over a week's time, can amount to hours. Hours without anything to show for it, other than tired fingers and cramped wrists. Now I don't have all the answers to this problem — and part of it is poor design work from software and hardware engineers who seem more interested in making thin

Yesterday I was reading a book about writing -- and felt its lesson might be applied to art was well. The book was written by Ben Bova, a professional and very successful sci-fi writer. One of the things he counseled AGAINST was joining a small writing group (unless it was being taught by a professional writer) or letting your friends or family members give you advice unless they were really skilled writers themselves. His reason was that most writing groups composed of amateurs are apt to give bad advice and/or be jealous and thereby tear down anyone with talent. In the end a would-be writer in such a group was apt to get discouraged and qu

Thanks -- it is good to be back, and good to have been missed :o)

I've been busy trying to get my style and techniques to my liking, and if not there at least am near the mark.
I know that feeling,, I am working hard on my Nebula and finally have paying customers for it. But I still have a long way to go til I get it exactly the way i want it. Anyway it is great to have you back again!
