Tetrahedral Planetoid by dudecon Tetrahedral Planetoid by dudecon
Here it is! M.C. Escher's Tetrahedral Planetoid modeled in 3d.

This is the same view as the original woodcut. If you compare them carefully you'll see I wasn't very strict with the modeling, and took some liberties with the geometry. Still though, it is very close, and all the features are in there (I think). You can see the development of this model on my website: [link]

This project has taken over three years all told, though there were long stretches of inactivity. The process of creating the geometry has been much more grueling than I anticipated. Getting all of the odd faces to match up, while maintaining the beautiful regularity of the model has proven extremely challenging. Even thinking about modeling some of the shapes has taken a while, and I have yet to develop a consistent mode of thought which can adequately address all of the issues I've encountered. I encourage anyone wishing to stretch their spacial perception and 3d modeling skills to tackle this simple yet elusive object.

That's my favourite Escher picture. Now you have to make the tetrahedron edges straight like the on the original and then it's fine.

Escher's renderings are difficult to replicate in part because they have a non-euclidean visual mapping. It's not just perspective or isometric, but an odd mixture of the two.
But, if you'd like to try your hand, the source files are here:…

Great work of Escher!

My applauds to you, I started this about a year ago, took slightly different approach before moving onto other things. I started with the four sided solid and laid out the terraces. Having the perspective lines/walls laid out I figured it would be easier to extend or cut in the other shapes. I never got that far.

Well done! I applaud your perseverance! Many people would have given up halfway, or even earlier. Making 3D models always takes quite a bit of time, but especially so in this case. :+fav:

Thank you very much! Truth is, I did give up a few times. The trick is to come back and finish it.

Thanks! It made my brain ache for a while too... like, several years.
