The reason I'm writing this journal is because I think the life of Leonardo da vinci is really fascinating.
And I truly believe that any artist can learn a lot from him, and not only as an artist but also as a human being in general.
Before I start writing this journal I have to state a few things.
At first I have to admit I know far from everything about Leonardo da vinci, so if I say anything that is not right or I skipped something important please tell me in the comments!
Also I want you to know I am not a writer (far from it) and english is not my first language, so I'm sorry if some grammar may not be correct.
start seeing things
I will start this journal with the fact about Leonardo (as I will reffer to him from now on) that I personally think is the most interesting.
The fact that if Leonardo saw someone on the street who had an interesting look he followed him around for the whole day, only to remember certain things about that person so at the end of the day he could draw him from imagination.
I'm not saying we should all become stalkers but I am saying we should really pay attention to details and really see stuff around us.
Leonardo said this about the average person:
"he looks without seeing, listens without hearing, touches without feeling, eats without tasting, moves without physical awareness, inhales without awareness of odor or fragrance, and talks without thinking."
This is one of the basics of drawing, to really start seeing things and not just draw things because you think they may be there.
Leonardo always kept a notebook and he just drew everything! nature, animals, people and buildings.
Leonardo was as curious as can be, he wanted to know everything.
He wanted to know how the inside of a human worked, he wanted to know the right proportions of a human and he wanted to know how everything worked.
And because he was really curious he also invented a lot of stuff and was far ahead of his time.
He wasn't just satisfied with a simple drawing of a person, he wanted to know how the body worked and wanted to draw everything as correct as possible.
Curiosity is really important when you want to become a great artist!
Being curious of the effect of various mediums.
Try to experiment. just sketch everything you can see with everything you can use to draw.
And also be curious about the human body.
Don't just think a leg is just a leg but think about the fact that under the skin is flesh and underneath that is bone which keeps it all together.
The body is a big complex machine! try to understand it.
This was just the top of the iceberg (watch out titanic) there is a lot of information about Leonardo I did not write about.
Leonardo was a very interesting man and we can learn so much from him.
But for now I think I wrote enough.
If this journal catches on I will write more in the future.
And I truly hope I can inspire people to improve their artistic skills!
