Ophelia

Ophelia

Though the exact details of her death have become the things of legend, we remember her trivialities and the most unfortunate circumstances.  They say she went with red carnations and that daisies declared her innocence where she could not.  Lily of the valley was, by all accounts, a white spice in her Nordic blonde.  Poppies were the merciful ones, gracing her eyes with the greatest haze. Rumor has it that twenty roses grew in every color from the soil of her grave, but all the azaleas gave up on life when their maiden died.

Crane Wife

Silently, she stares at him across their table. How nice he looks – clean, shaven, slick, well dressed in some designer he doesn’t even know.  By contrast, she knows she hardly looks as well. Her hair and face have both grown thin. Her knuckles and wrists protrude past the point where people ask what she’s done to look so good. Everything is afflicted anemic pallor. Photographs on the mantle reflect the way things used to be, with her pink-cheeked and grinning, and him in his mismatched socks. Nowadays, it’s suits that his secretary matched for him. She chides herself for that. “Administrative assistant,” she r

Gumballs barrel out like boulders with the short-timer’s chummy smell. I play footsie with my tootsie whose creaking credulity knows no bounds. With the short-timer’s chummy smell and the pompousness of a palimpsest whose creaking credulity knows no bounds she slurps on sweetened tea. And the pompousness of a palimpsest couldn’t keep this girl from swirling, mad. She slurps on sweetened tea and gets up too early in the morning. Couldn’t keep this girl from swirling, mad, sad, nostalgic – oh!  Austere, my anodyne can sing and gets up too early in the morning. She does it all like birds can fly. Sad, nos

Sestina 1

Soft, night envelops my skin, a healing salve for intellectual burn. Love and tea lights, arsenic, old lace – greatest remnants of an age we could not keep safe caress me in a boiling bubble. On the stove, pots of noodle bubble, boil, film rising to the top, a slow skin – in the winter, then you feel safe; in the water, heat can still burn your tender flesh – add some paprika to the age of innocence, and babies in white lace. My mother’s wedding dress was lace, and when she sacrificed it for a baby’s bubble- head christening, there were riots for the age. But she still wrapped it on my skin, and then o

I heard about this girl once. She was marble white until someone foolishly spilled strawberry wine on her cheeks. Her hair was the color of peach schnapps – gingery, pinkish yellow through a goldfish bowl – and, one time, she stonewalled herself enough that her eyes shriveled from the salt. I, too, was once stained. It's my belief we all were. I spent too many years in captivity to see her; she was long since gone when I got out. Tracing the fingerprint fragments, I followed her into Europe. Together, we jumped borders and barriers, and waltzed across war zones to the tune of torture. One, two, three – the soldiers make another widow. One,

I am what you could be, you know.  I'm what you fear, or, perhaps, what you fear becoming. You know my twisted lips are correct in their enunciations, but rejection's our biggest road block. We're from the same design, You and I.  All that differentiates is that I was right.

After-Hogwarts: Tom

Tom grinned at his reflection in the silver plate, fingered it with the delicacy he only otherwise showed his wand.  It was a truly magnificent thing.  Finely crafted, and even the curvature didn't offset his face. The dusty, antiquated air of the shop was really the ideal backdrop, not some hallowed Ministry hall like everyone said.  The hollowed look his cheeks had taken on was perfectly angular.  A perfect end to everyone else's Tom Riddle. "Tom!  Get going or you'll be late to Mrs. Smith's!" Ah, Mrs. Smith – so easily his tender hands swayed her.  He grinned.  Couldn't be late.

The young woman stood alone in the hospital hallway, nothing around her but walls sterilized to perfection, fluorescent lights, one of which was on life support for fluorescent lights, and two exit signs, only one lit. No one was there with her, oddly enough for a hospital; all of the people had left, and her husband was dead. She had no family left...no friends. Just herself and a song running through her head. In her emptiness, she could hear the tune, but couldn't remember whom it was by. Beethoven was just as good a guess as Ricky Martin or The White Stripes. Black hair was pulled off of a pale face, except for one, wayward strand that r

Andrew's Sonnet

To my lady, drap'ed in the night's black Truly and madly, I find myself now Missing your smile, and your eyes, dear alack! Questioning, wondering if only how Could I from behind walls to you escape Seeking warmth and solace in your own arms And looking upon your own truest face That one face which could send men unto arms Sometimes I see that face in my dark dreams Whispering, calling me unto the sea Soft and perfect and calming the screams And another night it's you I wait to see Though you doubt your beauty, this much is true I can't wait until I return to you

We're doomed.

We're doomed.

"Let the robot holocaust commence: robots think we taste like bacon. Researchers at NEC System technologies and Mie University have designed the cute little guy to the right: a metal man gastronomist, "an electromechanical sommelier", capable of identifying wines, cheeses, meats and hors d'oeuvres. Upon being given a sample, he will speak up in a childlike voice and identify what he has just been fed. The idea is that wineries can tell if a wine is authentic without even opening the bottle, amongst other more obscure uses...like "tell me what this strange grayish lump at the back of my freezer is/was." But when some smart aleck reporter pla
