Decorative (557)

Even darts from stone to stone, even their busy bumblebee barely able to keep up with them. It is rare for them to have guests - or rather, rare that they're here to greet them. Luckily, their home is always kept in tip-top shape by the humans who live nearby, and they rarely have to clean up for themself.

Their excitement gets the better of them, as they topple over a small glass figurine of a bird, which they had forgotten on the third stone on the right. The bumblebee immediately crashes into their pansy, sending wax flying, the bright glow along the creature's form flickering wildly in tune with Even's surprise. Almost immediately, a white ptarmigan darts forward, squashing down to provide a soft landing pad, the pansy esk sliding along its feathers and coming to a stop.

(Nevermore can't help but laugh, icicles ringing with silent vibrations.)

Whisper nudges them with their snout, the ptarmigan straightening up slightly. The glowing bee slowly hovers up, as though dazed, as Whisper's own bee flits by as though offering condolences. Infinity, as young as they are old, hesitates before moving forward to help Even up as well.

The pansy esk recovers quickly, adjusting their flower and brushing wax aside almost akin to how a human fixes a hat - perhaps another habit they picked up from watching the nearby humans. Moving their accessory somewhere where they will no longer trip over it (though, of course, it will inevitably end up by their feet soon enough), they continue on to point at the nearest flowers. Pansies, naturally. The flower planter is filled with them, rows and rows of beautiful petals. Even tilts their head, willing beeswax to shrink so that their guests may compare the colors.

(Nevermore squints a little, sending down clouded moonlight to make it easier to see the flower beds through Whisper's green sunlight. The larger esk doesn't shrink away, finally used to the bird-like esk's quirks, and simply withdraws the plant-friendly light into their glass ball. Even has to resist the urge to hop up on the ptarmigan again, and more important the urge to jump for the shiny glass.)

Even gestures, animated, clearly an admirer of how each flower is placed, how the arrangement is organized. Their humans do such a wonderful job, with an eye for color coordination. They look up at their taller friends (though perhaps calling Infinity taller was a stretch, at the moment), only to see Nevermore shifting from icy foot to foot, a light gathering of clouds around him like a mischievous cloak. When Even looks back, all the pansies have turned a bright, glowing teal, surprising them enough that they don't watch where they're going, and tumble over their little figurine once more. Infinity catches them this time before they hit the ground, gently placing the blue esk on the ground, while Whisper's ptarmigan pecks at Nevermore's hopping form. Even is ready to join in on the play-fighting, when all four esk hear the tell tale sound of a creaking door.

They vanish, teal fading with chilled sparkles, clouds into shadows and sunlight into the sky. The only things left, as Even's resident humans step out of their home, are two bees, one glowing as though by a trick of a light, though even they quickly disappear among the flowers.

Harmony (151 WC)

Sunlight reaches

Between glass and wax

Winding through whispered steps

And quick feet, and quick wings.

Curled on marble

Moss green and white

Winding through the clovers

Still, waiting, still still.

Arrival, greeting.

Twins buzz

Around root and rock

Matching feathers follow suit

Bringing gentle greenery behind.

Curiosity, compact

Beneath blue and yellow

Dancing through chiseled vines

Forgetting glass with friends.

Blooming light

Over wood and granite

Following those at home

And watching, and learning.

Ivory eternity

In leaves and petals

Finding home in history

And regrowth, reclaimed.

Show, tell.

Round forms

Both big and small

Perching among the statues

But one never sits still.

Expressive wax

Shifting tall and curled

Picking up figurines

Collected for the crowd.

Pale prints

On trellis and etching

Vanishing on determined lichen

Working hard to thrive.

Mismatching eyes

Climb stone and ivy

Remembering, admiring, past and future

Overgrown, overseen.

Present, convergence.

Intertwining time and nature.

Research in the City (556)

If Infinity could look puzzled, they sure do in this moment. Even waits eagerly, bumblebee buzzing around their waxy petals, glowing bright with expectation. The serpentine esk turns mismatched eyes from one thing to another - a bundle of yellow-green grapes on one side, and a pile of fluffy pink confectionery on the other. There's confusion, maybe a hint of disbelief, as they consider the two very different substances.

The ptarmigan, being one of the few creatures here to actually have a mouth of sorts, pecks open one, two, three of the grapes. The bees are delighted, judging by the patterns they fly, before descending on the sweet treat. Whisper themself sits a few feet away, watching curiously, green sunlight pulsing gently through glass. It fills the area with a gentle warmth - or it would, had Nevermore not been so close by, offering - at least, politely - his own gentle coolness through white moonlight filtered through dark and teal clouds.

The bird-like esk plucks a grape off the stem, rolling it in his claws. Immediately, the fresh, juicy fruit solidifies into a frozen sphere, glistening under the two light sources. He rolls it back towards the group, watching as it comes to a halt by the familiars once more. The ptarmigan moves towards it momentarily, stops, before looking at Nevermore accusingly and returning to its original, softer, safer grapes.

Meanwhile, Infinity joins Even in the cotton candy, prodding at it carefully with their paws. The pink sugary substance differs wildly from the yellow-green grapes, and the serpentine esk can't help but wonder how the two things could possibly taste similar.

Humans, Even explains helpfully, burrowing into the cotton candy and pulling out their figurine. They figure out everything, one way or another. They wanted to make candy grapes, so they made candy grapes - the pansy esk peers up at Infinity, handing them the little glass bird, assuring that they'll get used to it when they're around real, living humans more, and not just statues.

Infinity considers that for a moment, using their telekinesis to pluck four grapes from the bunch. One floats to each esk present - Whisper catches it with their own telekinesis, while Nevermore and Even use their front paws. Perhaps for the best - Whisper's grape stays clean, while Even's quickly becomes covered in flaky beeswax. Nevermore, of course, turns his a bright, glowing teal rather than a block of ice, much to Even's delight.

None of them (except for the familiars) can truly enjoy the taste, but of the four, three of them have plenty of experience with humans one way or another, even if Infinity is still re-discovering them. For their part, Whisper only needs their friendship with the others - or perhaps just Even - to appreciate the hard work put into these confectionery fruits. Seeing the others change the grapes in their own ways, they relent - the yellow grape turns pale as a layer of wax covers it, then begins to glow with enchanted sunlight that swells along with their glass orb, causing the grass nearby to perk up. Infinity watches, looking between their own, normal grape and the pink candy, and wonders how long it will be before they too learn how to change the world like humans do. They wonder, for a moment longer, what sort of magic they will find within themself.

Recycle (511)

This time, the group finds themselves back by Nevermore's boundary. He had woken Grimoire briefly, but the grumbling esk insisted that they play elsewhere, and so the four - Nevermore and his ravenlings, Whisper, Even, and Infinity - instead explore the overgrown village that he calls his home.

Even finds an abandoned home filled with books and, remembering their time in autumn, quickly checks to see where their troublesome figurine is, just in case they trip and find themselves under a book yet again. Nevermore doesn't seem to want them to mess with the books - these ones are his, after all, and not some sort of weird dream books - and leads the pansy esk away with a swirl of moonlit clouds. The other two esk peer curiously through the doorway, before following teal-tinged frost, with a ptarmigan and two bees behind.

Infinity finds an altar, covered in small figurines. Though gentle, they immediately float up to them, examining each curiously. Nevermore calls them away before they can rearrange any to their liking, however, with a few wisps of clouds covering the table. The pansy esk, at least, is distracted chasing their own bee, while Whisper and their familiars watch on.

Outside, by the abandoned well, Whisper finds shards of glass. Nevermore, for once, doesn't complain, instead bringing the group together to examine the pieces closer. Together, the group rearranges them, slotting pieces back together. Even and Whisper's bees help by finding the next pieces, the enchantment on Even's invigorating both to work harder. Their linked esk use their shared beeswax elementals as makeshift glue, Whisper careful to not let their plant-nourishing sunlight to shine too bright, lest the wax melt onto their ptarmigan like Icarus. The light is contained within its own glass, glimmering. Nevermore, careful as well, marks pieces for future use with teal spots, and solidifies the wax with the extra help of some chilled air.

Once done, they find themselves with a series of glass bottles, perhaps potion bottles at one point. The objects are imperfect, with obvious cracks, some missing pieces and delicately, barely staying together. Not meant to be used, again, but Nevermore seems to think that is perfectly okay. Moonlight shining, he carefully uses his telekinesis to pick up each bottle, lifting them over the well and setting them down on the moss-covered stone edge. Suddenly understanding, Whisper sits up (as does Infinity, on their back), letting the sunlight shine from their accessory. With the help of Nevermore's icy magic, the magical wax is safe, and instead both moon and sunlight shine through the glass bottles. The cracks refract the light in wild patterns, much to Even's delight, whose glowing bee dances among the rays.

When the real sun sets and the esk part ways, Nevermore leaves the renewed bottles on the well. Come the morning, they'll catch the light again, creating a kaleidoscope of rays through the area. Not all broken things are lost, and many things can be brought back into balance, he thinks, and thinks on the three esk he brought into this world.

Urban Wildlife (523)

Whisper decides that, should they ever somehow end up becoming a part of the Developed Biome, they would like to have a pigeon or two in their flock, watching in wonder as Even runs through the plaza, startling the mass of birds. Humans walk on the edges, none the wiser to the presence of esk, merely assuming the city birds were doing their own thing.

The Forest esk, for their part, perches on the edge of a planter, resting. They are less than comfortable away from their home Biome, their leaves gone, magic diminished. But it's worth it to see Even having fun, they think, glancing at the little glass figurine of a bird between their paws. The accessory, pushed to them a few minutes earlier, wouldn't be able to trip up the pansy esk if it is being held like this.

Infinity, for once, is coiled around Nevermore's branches as he casually sits with another gathering of pigeons. Not crows nor ravens, but his shape fit in well enough, if one could look past the plants, moonlight-glowing ice, and dark clouds with bioluminescent wisps that surrounds him. The serpentine esk uses their vantage point to observe the birds around them, occasionally glancing off towards Even as the mouse-sized esk darts by. On a third pass, the glowing bee Even called their familiar slowed to a hover, buzzing near the pigeons slowly pecking for food near the two abnormal esk. Bit by bit, the pigeons began pecking faster and faster, invigorated, a few even finding twigs from debris and flying off. Nevermore tilts his head, letting a chilled cloud of purple, white, and teal waft towards the enchanted bee, shooing it back to Even, and the pigeons slowly calm.

As the bumblebee returns to Even, they finally slow down, looking up at it with delight, the wax tucked in their flower unfurling into a series of faux stamen. The bee lands among the wax, vibrating gently, its glow brightening for a second. Even turns, trotting back in the direction of Whisper, far too short to hop over the edge of the planter but looking up at the larger esk all the same.

If Whisper could smile as humans did, they would. Instead they simply get to their feet, hopping down, using their telekinesis to hang onto the glass figurine. They let Even lead them further into the open plaza - if one can consider a square filled with birds to be "open". Passing by the other two esk, Whisper hands Infinity the figurine, the white esk holding it carefully among Nevermore's dogwood branches, beginning to wiping condensation off of it as it already begins to form from the chilled elementals.

Now free, the Forest and Developed pair move away, moving among the waddling pigeons. Even points out a few leucistic pigeons, one piebald, another brown and all the others with iridescent throats. Maybe one day they'll have enough energy to get a pigeon, the pansy esk hums, excited. Whisper can't help but agree, and even as the humans seemed to ignore both the birds and the esk, the two watch them come and go.
