Funny, my job workstation blocks me from creating journals the traditional way, but Stash Writer works just fine...Instead of running away from commissions, I'm training myself to balance them with personal work. The martial arts series of commissions are winding down, I have a color job to do and I may be doing a comic for someone, albeit a short one, but it'll still be a big project. I'm still open for simpler commissions starting at $40, in case anyone is interested (note me).On the personal art front, I've been spending a lot of time developing Jet Dancer's comic (some of the progress is in my scraps but it's not indicative of how far I've actually gotten) as well as model sheets of Jet Dancer and her "sisters". I'm also working on drawing more WEAPON Combat League developmental work. I have a promo shot of another team in progress similar in style to the Striker Team image I posted a couple of days ago. I'm also developing to make more character bios in the spirit of as I continue the project of blowing up the WCL Mini Thumbs and turning them into fully-rendered illustrations. I'm still on the fence as to how I intend to finally publish WCL--as a written novel, perhaps supported by illustrations, or maybe as a comic book/graphic novel series. The more I think about it, the more the idea of making it a video game is exciting, but possibly unfeasible for me to do alone. It would take months to get one character right, and WCL has at least 24 that I would want to be playable, to say nothing of enemies, bosses, environments, etc.
As some may have noticed, I've been coloring differently on a lot of my work, trying softer coloring approaches more akin to digital painting. I'm not sure if it's making my work "better" per se, rather than just different. Variety is nice and I'll likely continue practicing, but I still see cel shading as the best coloring approach for my art. What I need to improve is probably not coloring but my decisions during core drawing. More exaggeration, more dynamic poses needed, especially if I want to find a way to draw more attention to my WCL work, which people tend to gloss over in favor of my simpler, lowest-common-denominator works. But even if it never happens, the fact that my WCL work even gets the few favorites and comments it does is an indicator that someone likes it, and that's where I should keep my focus. I've abandoned and changed my mind so many times I doubt anyone really takes these statements seriously anymore, so I'm working hard to prove both to myself and to the world that I'm capable of following through and completing my projects.
I have a 3DS, but I'm probably not the best person to ask about the WiiU. I don't have enough time to play the 3DS itself. It's a pretty good system, but right now needs more games. Japan has plenty, but it is taking time for them to be localized. Unfortunately, North American developers seem very reticent to bring out major properties on a portable. That means that we just have to wait and see what is brought over from Japan.
Last week, 187,077 3DS were purchased by customers in Japan. The Vita only sold 4,021. It may be a good idea to wait and see before buying a Vita. If the low sales problem can't be solved, then it may not get enough games.
