Journal Entry: Wed Apr 8, 2009, 10:36 AM
How is everyone doing?

As I indicated in my previous journal, I reactivated my City of Heroes/Villains account. Even now I'm not sure how good an idea it was, but I'll see how well I can balance playing the game and working on art. Those who know me from way back probably remember that, when I first discovered the game, I was so addicted to it that I nearly gave up drawing. :pc: I found myself infatuated with the fact that I could create the kinds of characters I wanted to in the game's engine without the hassle of drawing, and I wasn't very confident in my work back then...an awful combination. However, I'm older, more mature and more confident in my work now, so we'll see how it plays out.

And speaking of confidence, I'm making a change to my uploading M.O. I will no longer be uploading rough pencil sketches or WiPs. I see my rough sketch work as imperfections on an otherwise decent gallery, like cracks and chippings in a painted wall. I know my pencil work isn't very neat or polished and it probably never will be, since I do most of my final art digitally, and frankly I don't like looking at it. In fact, I won't be uploading anything that isn't finished from now on, unless it's a line art that I invite people to color. (FYI, anyone who wants to is welcome to color any line art in my gallery.) I will probably go to another forum to post WiPs if I feel I really need critiques. I have active accounts on Penciljack and ConceptArt.org.

Normally I'd want to be about showing, not telling, my plans...but I figured my watchers would want to know why there may be many days or weeks between my future uploads.

:iconhulkdaddyg: has invited people to draw comic-based battles between anyone's OCs (original characters) and his own, and I've decided to take part. I roughed up a battle between my Jet Dancer and his K'alluvia, so those of you who have been wanting to see Jet in a little more depth (and hot pants) will get your wish. However, as I stated above, I won't be uploading anything until it's at a completed state. Because my time is limited, I don't expect to be done quickly, but I'll be uploading every fully inked, colored and lettered page as I finish them.

My good friend :iconkennygordon: and I have been in talks about collaborating with commission work and expanding beyond the reaches of dA. Hopefully that will lead to good things.

As far as personal projects go, my recently uploaded "Screw my day job..." poster Screw my day job... by Dualmask is nearing completion. I'm using it as my second practice piece of the new "fake vector" approach that I used when coloring this. I decided to omit one character from the final composition (and resize others), but it should still look decent when I'm done. That picture is the beginning of my personal restructuring... you're going to start seeing more of my OCs, in every sense. More of them, and more pictures of them. There's a lot more to me than Nia Black, Faith Roberts and Jet Dancer, and it's high time I resurrected that part of myself. I'm returning to my roots... abandoning the traps I have allowed myself to fall into over the last couple of years and going back to the artist I want to be...drawing what I love and loving what I draw, and that's it.

I think that's all I have to say for now. As always, I greatly appreciate all the comments, favorites and other attention you send my way. :thanks:

JP

I'm not a fan of kiribans but I figure it's only right to celebrate my long-forthcoming 100k mark. Whoever catches the 100,000th page view with a screencap will get a fully-rendered image of the character of your choice.

That's an understandable idea! I, too, am a fan of quality over quantity. I know I'm a newer watcher of yours, but I've learned so much from you already, and you have inspired me to be a better and more productive creator. I wish you and :hulkdaddyg: the best in your project!

Hey, buddy could you do me a favor and not post anything until it's completely done? I want to post the stories at the same time, so it can be fun for everyone. Also I wanted it to be true duel so I don't want to be influenced by you and what you did.

Doing an off-site project? That's what :icondragonbrush: and I did... Just got the site up and running not long ago, though now that i've got Dreamweaver/Flash CS3, i'm going to completely redesign it... You guys gonna get a site up?

No...:iconmidnighter: and I were just thinking we'd go to sites like Myspace and what not, promoting our collaborative art. He draws, I color, or I draw and he colors... nothing major. Maybe if something grows from it, a site or online "studio" of artists could come of it...who knows. It was just a simple little idea he had that I went along with.

Way too much to think about right now...I'm not even certain how well ~midnighter and I will work together yet, as I'm notoriously a loner by nature.

 It's not about ducking, it's about being honest. I never really liked the idea of teams. For as many great artistic teams out there, the ones I admire most are the ones who do most of the heavy lifting by themselves, folks like :iconadamwarren:, folks like people who do ongoing webcomics by themselves, like :iconalexds1: ...and that's how I want to be, even if it takes longer, even if it means the work isn't as good as it could be with a team. Because I prefer to rely solely on myself.

But like I said, :iconmidnighter: had an idea, and at the time I thought nothing of it. Maybe it'll grow into something bigger, maybe it won't. I figured it's worth a try...but to suddenly form a massive cabal of united artists, that's way more than I'm interested in.

My own productivity sky rocketed after canceling my COH/CoV account. It was so easy to get caught up in a character's level progression and costume changes and neglect my fictional characters. A year later, I tend to still have occasional heavy game marathons but they eventually end. I played Fallout 3 non-stop till I finished it but the important thing was I finished it and was able to walk away.

I really like your poster. It's pretty fantastic.

I don't believe I'll fall into the trap of the game the way I did in the past. I mean, I've really been there and done that...I was one of the people who got it when it first came out.

Part of the reason I reactivated it was because the CoH forums were where I got my first real commissions from and I wanted to see if I could have better luck there than I've been having here lately. Can't access the forums without an active account, and I could do one commission a month and the game would in effect pay for itself.

And thanks! I'm glad you like the poster. It should be even better when it's complete.

Every time I look at my sketches I think to my self, "Good lord, what was I thinking?!" So I can understand where you're coming from.

Yeah...the funny thing is I always know what I'm plotting on when I draw a piece, and most of the crits I get on the pencil sketches end up being things I plan to fix in Photoshop anyway (or already fixed, but just didn't bother to update online). So I kept asking myself "why do I stain my gallery with these sloppy sketches when I know the final outcome will be good?" The answer finally came to me... "Don't."
