Project Journal - Jan.2014

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 7, 2014, 8:16 AM

Here's hoping that writing down my projects in a public forum, along with being as specific and timely as possible with my action steps and expected completion times, will help me be more productive.

Projects I'm taking action on:

Jet Dancer Issue 1 - After realizing that it would take more work and locomotion to stop this from becoming the latest in my pile of past incompletions... I cut it short from my original plan and now only need to create two pages to consider the first issue (22 pages) done and ready for publishing. I anticipate being able to finish this project within the next 2-3 weeks, with the entire comic finalized by the end of this month. I had an epiphany. I was focused too much on simply putting a comic book out instead of producing the best comic possible. Yes, I could finish a 22 page Jet Dancer comic by the end of this month, probably sooner. It's got a cover and an interior cover credits page and 20 of the 22 pages I was planning to put out are fully drawn, inked, colored and lettered, and I'm finishing up the inks for page 21 even as I write this. But I also realized that I chose to make this comic one small part of a Jet story I'd originally written with intent to make a larger introductory graphic novel, and the section I chose does not stand well on its own. Even though Jet DOES have a back story and I HAVE written it out, the comic I would have put out, on its own, gives the reader NO reason to care about Jet as a character. It barely gets into her persona or history at all--it's almost as if the comic isn't about Jet but everyone around her.

So I decided to do something different. I'm going back to my original plan. You might remember a Jet Dancer comic that started sort of military-insertion style featuring Jet and four other women. JD: Dance 1 Page 1 by Dualmask Well, that's actually the real start of Jet's story and it segues into her origin and how she gets to be the character she's most recognizable as today. I decided against working on it in the past because I thought I should get a shorter, quicker comic out and use her back story as a flashback later, but I want to give Jet the best start possible.

What does this mean? It means Jet won't be in a complete comic by the end of this month. It will take longer. But I am shaking off the spirit of laziness and the hunger for instant gratification and putting my best foot forward, even if it takes all of 2014. I'm going to finish the page I'm drawing now because I'll need it later, but then it's back to showing Jet and her fellow 'sisters' before things change. I'd rather take longer and produce the story the right way than create a rushed product that will all but guarantee savvy readers dismiss Jet before giving her a chance.

WEAPON Combat League Game - My plan is to animate the characters one-by-one and figure out how to program the sprites so they react to attacking and being attacked in a basic environment. I'm studying lots of resources to this end, and sketching out move ideas. To start I just want each character to do one attack and make it work in the logic. If I can get one move working, it's smooth sailing from there. I don't really know how long it will take, and it's hard to be specific and timely, but it's something I'm acting on between other engagements.

Commissions - I've decided that I'm no longer doing illustration commissions starting January 2014--color work only, for the forseeable future, so I can free myself up to work on my personal projects. However, I have some standing clients from last year to whom I have illustration commitments, so I'm working hard on those. The first one should be done within the next couple of days.

And I'm sticking to it, too. And if something goes wrong, I refuse to fret about it. Just adjust my sails and keep it moving.
