I don't usually do this sort of thing. Actually, I don't think I ever have before, but this is kind of unprecedented for me. I apologize if this comes off as bragging--it's not meant to be. I'm just shocked.

The feedback I've gotten on my latest drawing, Jet Freefall by Dualmask is pretty phenomenal. Usually when I upload a drawing, it gets somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-50 favorites over the course of a couple of days and then it falls off the radar. But for some odd reason, my latest drawing has blown that out of the water, getting more views and favorites in a single day than most of my work has ever gotten at all. As of this writing it has 95 favorites and over 1000 views. It's on the first page of the popular Traditional Art section and the fourth page of the main Popular Art section (which I don't normally browse but when I saw how many favorites the image was getting in such a short time, I was curious). Eight people have added me to their watch since I uploaded it and it's been asked to be part of an extra group or two.

I don't expect it to appear on the main front page, but still...it's pretty shocking to me that something of mine would be so well received in such a short time, especially considering I didn't color it and it's really not my cleanest pencil work.

I guess it's true what I've been saying...what you draw is more important than how well you draw it.

Thanks everyone who viewed, commented upon and faved my work!

Sorry, I almost never enter contests. I spend the little free time I have developing my own projects.

here's something else this piece attracted your way, I'm no one big, but:

I pushed the start date for that contest to April 15th so it hasn't started yet

Now you know how to become more popular- include moar crotch shots :dummy: I think the art is really good, all of your art is, it's such a shame that brilliant art gets overlooked until it involves crotches or whatever though.

Thanks a lot! True, but even if that's the case, it's not even the first time I did a crotch shot. That's definitely part of it's appeal, I guess, but there's more to it. Well, no biggie...it's not like I don't like drawing this kind of work every once in a while. ;)

I've noticed when this pic hit the 60+ mark in faves. Personally, I think that the reason for the high number of views and faves is simply that the art kicks ass. Looking at the thumbnail, the anatomy is strong, and despite the lack of color, the entire piece seems to grab your attention. You can never know what will be popular with the masses.

But that's the thing--I didn't do anything new on that drawing. No new approaches or styles, it's literally nothing I couldn't draw before. Not that I'm complaining, but it really makes it hard to pin things down.

For instance, I colored a few things this year by just going over my pencils with cel shading instead of digital inking my drawings first, and they all have a relatively high number of favorites (compared to other work in my gallery anyway). That's a clear indicator that something is working. But that Freefall drawing? I mean, I know that Jet Dancer drawings tend to draw in more viewers than my other stuff, but it's never happened like this before.

I'm glad it happened, but I just don't get it. ^^;

You've looked at the piece from a negatively-critical perspective (pointing out some minor faults), but when you look at it from a positive angle, what do you see that works in it? What did you do right?

Personally, I can see several reasons why it was well-received. The easiest is looking at the thumbnail- the composition is strong and easy to read.

You're doing something right, I figure- now to grow with it.

Thanks, I needed that. It's something I don't do often enough...try to figure out what IS working instead of just looking for flaws. To be honest, I'm not sure what it is. It could just be that I incorporated some foreshortening and posted her in an unorthodox pose, but I can't do that every single time. Whatever the case, I did something right and I really need to pin it down if I'm going to deliberately make some progress instead of looking for the next happy accident.

Thanks! You're right. I recall reading in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics that simpler styles and ideas tend to make our brains do less work to understand what we're seeing, which makes them that much more appealing to a wider audience.
