iPad Pro test by Dualmask iPad Pro test by Dualmask
I was all set and prepared to continue my work on WCL when a friend of mine came around and showed me his new iPad Pro. He left it in my care for a few hours so I tried it out. Forgot all about what I was planning because drawing on the iPad Pro felt like a dream--the most natural feeling digital drawing tool I've ever used. Although this isn't my best work, I did feel very comfortable drawing on the Pro, more so than I have on my Chromebook or even my Cintiq. I have to admit, Apple did a great job with it. And the apps are better too... Android really gets the short end of the stick.

Now I need one of my own. Maybe I should reopen commissions... :plotting:

What app are you using for the iPad pro?

I drew this in Medibang Paint, a totally free program. It's also available for Windows and Android, but from what I've seen, it's best on iOS.

Buying anything made by apple is a mistake.  Speaking as someone who has worked in tech support for 14 years.

Regardless of that, this is some nice work, there's a good feeling here.

Really? Is it that bad? I hear nothing but good things about this particular product. I've never liked iPhones or anything else Apple, but the drawing experience on the Pro is second to none for me.

It's because apple is still apple. Their products are overpriced, their support is third-rate, they will do everything they can to avoid supporting you if you do have an issue, they will lie to you about the capabilities of their product, and they're not selling you a product, they're selling you a lifestyle.

For example, with regards to their computers, Apple has gone back to advertising that implies that they don't get viruses. It's carefully worded to say that they don't get PC Viruses, but they make it sound like viruses aren't a problem.  When they are.  Because there is money to be made in exploiting people with macs.

Apple is built on lies. Their culture is built on them being unable to do wrong.

Truth be told the same could be said of any tech company, but I hear you. Profit is all their bottom line, whether you're dealing with Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Wacom or whoever. Though I can't speak on customer service issues the way I'm sure you can.

That being said, I will give it some time--the price of the iPad Pro forces me to do so anyway--and see how my friend feels about his device in a few weeks, see how it holds up.

I just want a lightweight, comfortable, portable digital drawing solution. My Cintiq Companion is bulky and I'm not fond of the aspect ratio--I kind of wish I had gone with something like a Surface Pro 4 instead, but I hate that its stylus requires batteries. I like my Chromebook, but Android apps don't compare to iOS apps and the stylus is not great. The iPad Pro seems to fit the bill.

What you want is not unreasonable by any stretch.  If you end up choosing to go with the apple product, I really hope that it pans out for you and that you don't run into issues!  I'm just really surprised that no-one has developed a better application for android than what is available currently.  That sounds like a rather large market that is unaddressed, I wonder if there's an opportunity there...

The Chromebook Plus is close. It has Android apps on it, and I've tested many of them. I've found a couple that work really well, but like I said, the stylus just doesn't compare to the Pencil. I'm sure Samsung sees there is an opportunity to once again one-up Apple and I hope they do someday (I'm no Apple fanatic), but for now, IMO Apple has the edge when it comes to portable digital art tools.
