WEAPON Combat League Board Game concept by Dualmask WEAPON Combat League Board Game concept by Dualmask
So yesterday, I did this thing.

As a kid, I used to be heavily into building board games. I would cut up shoe boxes or whatever other box I could get my hands on, take rulers, markers and what not to them and build playable board games for myself and my friends. I made racing games, treasure hunting games...there was even this one "platformer" that I made stand vertically so players could ascend a tower. I did this more than I drew comics, and that's what drove me to study game art and design as I grew older.

For some random reason, all of that came flooding back yesterday as I was sitting in the basement once again wondering what I would do with my art. I took my WEAPON Combat League concept and just started writing down ideas for a turn-based, grid-based arena combat game where individual characters would have varying strengths, weaknesses and special moves. I printed out old drawings of the characters on cardstock paper and made crude player tokens, dug up my double dice, designed a little board, and wrote up some rules.

Even my kids Jonelle and Jayden got involved and helped me test the game. To make it work, I needed to use an Excel spreadsheet to calculate damage and what not, and a lot of rules got adjusted on the fly, but I dare say the game actually worked and my kids and I had fun with it.

Best part about all this was that my kids really seemed into it. Suddenly they're huge fans of my WCL characters, they have favorite characters and teams and all, and my daughter (who's 10) gave me some real ideas how to tweak the game and balance things out. Couldn't have done it without them. :)

I think I want to take this further. Tighten up the rule set, balance the characters (some were more than a little overpowered) make a bigger/better board (I'm thinking a hexagonal board instead of squares), bigger tokens that I can print information on the back of, maybe cards...and either learn to, or hire someone to, make sculpts of the characters so I can make some 3D-printed tokens...

This is fun. I feel inspiration flooding in.

That's what's up. If I could think that broadly I'd do this too. VERY cool idea.

Thanks! The vision for this isn't going away, but I need a clear head to focus on it. So I need to tie up loose ends. Nia Black's novel was a loose end in the past, and now Jet Dancer's comic is the same.

This is awesome Jonathan man. Your WCL is already built for this type of property. I can see this getting big. Really big man. I like the fact that your little ones really took to the idea. I could also see the WCL being successful in the collectible card game scene.

That's the big dream for me. All I see with my WCL concept is vast potential...board games, card games, visual novels, I've thought about all of that and more. It's just so hard picking one direction, but I'm not going to simply let it fade away. I'm going to start somewhere and if it doesn't work out, try something else.

That's pretty awesome! I like the basic idea, and it's good to hear about a definite playtesting system. Hexes are much nicer than squares for many reasons- a bit trickier to program for (fortunately paper doesn't have this problem), so it's good to see you moving in that direction.

Thanks! I have to admit this idea still excites me. Once I've cleared some things from my mental plate, I'm going to go back to this.

Awesome! Would love to read the rules. Suppose you know boardgamegeek.com? Do you think about publishing it?

If it's interesting, I know someone eager to do something 3D-printableboardgamestuff. I don't know if this is his thought and he's on Vacation at the Moment, but if you're interested I will ask him when he's back.

Regards, Axel

Thanks! This game is really in its infancy...even when I was playing it with my kids I was writing down all sorts of questions and issues that came up, so I don't have an official rule list yet. I'm going to have to do some research and keep working on it.

Someone else mentioned boardgamegeek.com to me on Facebook. First I'd heard of the site, but it looks like the place to be for this sort of thing. I don't know what else is out there as far as this kind of game goes. I'll be putting more information out there as the game develops. Right now I'm working on the rules and battle system, trying to keep it true to the concept of my universe and characters.

It would be awesome to meet someone who's interested in making 3D printable miniatures for a game. I'd love to learn about the process, at the very least.

Happy New Year! Hope everything works out fine for you!? How's the Boardgame going? I asked my friend, and he doesn't think he can tell you something important. He is just starting out as well, and it's just his free time. Apologies, that it took me so long and the best of luck! Regards, Axel

I ended up putting the board game aside...ran out of ideas as to how to evolve it into something worthwhile. I think I'm more interested in electronic games anyway. But thanks and Happy New Year to you as well. :)

Very welcome! I know exactly what you mean, I'm not even close to the status, that I can 'playtest' my ideas in detail. To many ideas for to less time :-). The trying I did also resulted in a long list of issues and questions.

When my friend is back I will ask him, what he can tell you, or want to do. Meeting will probably be a difficult thing taking into account, that we live somewhere in the deep nowhere of Germany ;-). But maybe online communication is okay for you?! Another offer, like I said, I would love to read the rules, if you want to, send anything to me, that you got and I will go through and see, if I understand everything, annotate questions,...

At the moment I'm eager to build: www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgam...
Looks pretty interesting and I had a pretty similar Idea, so before working further on mine, I just wanted to give it a try.

Concerning 3D printable miniatures game, take a look at: dutch-mogul.deviantart.com/art...
They did a pretty awesome job.

Have a nice weekend, regards, Axel

PS: I will add you to my watchlist and hopefully recognize when you got something new

Daang man, I think this still looks really cool with the 2D playing pieces. Nice work and I look forward to seeing this advance, it looks very interesting. One specific thing that I like is how simple the board looks, just fyi!

Thanks! I have to admit that despite the fact that this didn't take much to put together, I feel really good about it. There's something about having those physical pieces to play with right there in hand...nothing else quite like it.

Now that's NEAT. Funny, now I remember dong pretty much the same thing too when I was 10-12 y.o...I guess I've just been obsessed with creating, anything...

But seeing this reminds me of the Cyberpunk 2020 RPG I used to play about 20 yrs ago. Miniatures and tabletop maps and the DM busting his brain figuring out line of sight, blast damage etc...'Friday Night Firefight'. Good times.

Y'know, board games have been making a comeback for a good few years now. With your art skills and a compelling concept & rules, you could have something pretty good there ;)

Thanks! There's just something about creating a physical product with your own hands, no matter how crude...

I keep thinking about how this thing could grow. I have so many ideas. The WCL story is so vast that it could easily translate to any number of battle scenarios that could be implemented with different board layouts. I've never played any tabletop RPGs but I can imagine they were pretty much similar to what I'm thinking about, especially in terms of blast damage and lines of sight and the like. I dream of making miniatures of the characters...in fact I've been wondering about trying it with papercraft, if I could only learn how.

This is the kind of stuff that really messes me up though. I have all these other projects going on (although I suppose they couldn't have been THAT compelling...) and then all of a sudden I stumble across something new and compelling (I mean, this was really out of left field when it happened) and then I have to start debating whether I'll focus on what I was doing before or if I'll go forward with the new and exciting idea.

I'm totally with you on the "all of a sudden I stumble across something new and compelling" - it seems there's barely a week goes by now when I don't come up with an idea for something new - or else, start some doodle or scribble which suddenly gets very serious, and leads on to a whole project or concept. Every time I seem about to clear my desk a little of some project, two more pop up.

This is partly the fun of being a creator though, I reckon - the creating stage.

True...but as you know if we want to get anything done, we have to learn how to turn that "fun part" off when it's time to put the work in. ;)

Definitely, although in recent years I've really come to enjoy the 'donkey work' as well - things like inking and colouring/shading, where I get to see the image take form before my eyes, have become much less of a chore.

Cool idea. a Suggestion might be to get you a giant sheet of that Office Depot Tear away office pads.. will give you a huge surface to map out. Also it gives a cool depth and dimension to it if you can incorporate your comic/story into it as well.

I definitely want to build the story into the gameplay. I can already envision ways to do that, like coming up with more combatant tokens besides the competitors (drone type soldiers, larger tokens representing things like battleships and defensive walls and the like...) and creating different grid layouts to represent the various environments that the story takes place in.

There can even be extended packs that feature different characters and scenarios...this could be big.

As for the tear away office pads, I'll definitely look into that. Is that like graph paper?

No it's Easel Paper so just a Gigantic blank canvas that you can use markers on without bleeding through. I use them everyday for my office training class. There are like 20/30 sheets and the other cool thing is they tear off very clean *usually*. And they have a sticky strip so you can hang them up and look at them and compare if you want.

Like a dungeons and Dragons type deal, where you create the story and perhaps use dice to attack?

Pretty much, though I've never actually played any DnD games. I have lots of ideas, like using the big story I wrote as a framework to create different battle scenarios and designing different layouts of the grid for varying battle scenarios (kind of like Advance Wars and games like it). I'm currently working on developing the battle system so there isn't TOO much dice rolling and number-crunching to slow things down.

Might I suggest, if you would like to add to the appearance of the board game. Pehaps design the playing ground some how. Perhaps with images that reflect the conflict. At least with that story, does that make sense at all?

Yeah, one idea I had was to build "walls" around the grid with illustrations that reflect distinct environments like the arena, city streets and the like...not too high so it doesn't make the game awkward to play, but done right, it could be immersive. It could even just be one background wall.

Depending on how the gameplay mechanics workout. Could you perhaps put things like buildings on the playing field to affect the movement. So for instance, a player can have a tactical advantage by being able to attack from above increasing some damage rates. While also certain characters will perhaps be able to go on top of buildings say perhaps Jet Dancer's (fan favorite) movement grid is a lot wider then say Nia. There for, she can get on top of the building faster to attack the opponent. Adding to that, Nia's attack grid can be longer as she uses guns. Hope I am making sense here. Hard to explain these type of things. Basically, the playing field can vary.

You're making sense. In my prototype version of the game, there are characters who are melee (who can only attack one space ahead) and ranged (who can attack three spaces ahead but can't counterattack in close range). The melee characters tended to be faster and/or stronger to compensate for it being possible for them to be picked apart by ranged attackers while trying to close the gap. It was really basic, but it worked as a foundation.

And what of the idea of different terrains within the game. Different game boards  can change a match entirely.

I didn't get into that yet, but I will. I'm still trying to solidify the basics. The most important thing to me right now is to make sure the battle system works without any hiccups. Then I need to establish every character as an individual and balance things so that any team/character is a viable choice, because the characters represent the core of the battle system.
