Nia Sprite - high contrast style by Dualmask Nia Sprite - high contrast style by Dualmask
Got it in my head to try making the Nia sprite (and the game aesthetic in general) in the same approach that I took with my comic attempt because I remembered how fun (and relatively easy) it was to render everything with just black and white. Plus games like LIMBO and Madworld make the limited color approach look pretty good.

The same walk cycle as before, with some tweaks to make things look clearer with just black and white (and the touches of color like her lips and necklace). I want to decide between doing it this way or doing it with color the way I'd previously prepared; I was thinking that certain elements like muzzle flashes and blood spatters would be in color, but everything else would be some combination of black and white; perhaps with some gray or even muted color for the backgrounds.

I need to make up some kind of mockup game screen to see how it feels.

That's a really neat look for Nia- the stark black and white really makes her stand out. Like you said, the background would have to be done carefully so that she stood out properly, but with thought it could look awesome.

Thanks! I feel quite strongly about the high contrast look--it suits Nia's mythos more than anything else. When/if I work with Nia on a serious level again, this will likely be the default look for the work, whether in comics or games.l

You did great here. Her motion is pretty smooth and realistic.

Glad you dig it. :) Making additional moves is introducing all kinds of complications that I didn't initially think of though. Everything she does has to have an additional "guns out" variation...

I like it. Madworld was a great looking game that I wish had come out for PC.

Madworld was certainly great looking, but the gameplay was lackluster IMO. Glad you like this!

I only watched the playthrough, sadly.

Oooh, I like! Very noir.

Y'know, a black-and-white 2d side-scroller of this style would be really unique, and provided that there are good game mechanics, really sweet to play. :D

I'm thinking the noir look will make it not only more visually unique but also easier for me to prepare. I'm already not the greatest when it comes to environments and levels, and having to pick colors on top of everything else just makes it more taxing. That may be why despite my best efforts, the 13+ pages I drew for Nia's noir-style comic were probably the best I've ever done (and it got further than all my other efforts which also says something).

As for mechanics, the best I can hope for is that everything works as intended at this stage... ^^; But I believe I can get it together.

Yeah, black and white seems a great visual style. I really like the high-contrast it offers, actually...if my linework were a bit more steady, I'd probably lean on it more.

Even if it just "works", there's no harm in getting the basics up and having a developer spice it up some more. The art will be yours and the concept, they can just help realize some of your ambitions when it comes to the mechanics.

You're right...can't get too hung up on perfection right now. Get a build running and then polish...with help if necessary.

Yeah, I'm familiar with it. Played it briefly, but I didn't really like the game. It looked great but wasn't fun to me.

I only really looked at it, didn't think the game itself looked like fun to play, but I admire the inventive art style. Reminded me a lot of some stuff from a comic book called 2000ad from back in the 80s.

I can really see this working though, making it all noir with some exciting splashes of colour here and there to highlight it would be very striking.

If you get some footage of her sprite walking around a black and white level I'd love to see it.

I'll see what I can do. I have some ideas to try out.
