Nia Sprite - New Walk Animation by Dualmask Nia Sprite - New Walk Animation by Dualmask
I know this doesn't exactly help the whole indecisiveness thing, but I wanted to post it anyway because I feel good about it.

Good smooth action, and a sense of purpose to her walk. I like the "weight" of her movement, it conveys her power well.

Thanks! I made a minor change to my walk cycle approach and it made all the difference; just that little torso twist.

Glad you like it! One of my dreams is to see female video game avatars (more so in 2D games) with some real curves, not just oversized boobs, but a nice looking, fit figure.

Very smooth, I'm definitely seeing a more natural sense of movement here.

Incidentally, you could pursue animation as a job and then do comics in your spare time. :P

Thanks. I figured out a really simple change that balanced things out nicely.

I already work full time so I can only pursue one extra thing right now if I'm going to be serious about it... ^^; in fact that's part of the indecisiveness trap I keep falling into. Fact is between my day job which keeps my bills paid and my family that already requires my attention, it's really hard trying to gain skills both a comic artist and an animator at the same time...I really feel like I'm trying to do too much. But I can't help it--I love the results I'm getting. Hence why my brain is constantly telling me 'something's gotta give and something's gotta be the focus...'.

Build a portfolio. If you can get a solid job at an animation studio, you may be able to leave your desk job and then pursue comics on the side. ;)

Very good! Her head/neck looks a little stiff but the rest of it flows nicely. Walks are one of those things that we seem to bereally attuned to, so it's tough making them realistic within the confines of a sprite. You've done a great job on it.

Thanks! Yeah, I didn't do much with her head yet. I'm thinking about what kind of secondary animations are needed, including her hair, her belts, etc.

Holy smokes, that's a sexy-ass walk.

I suddenly flashed back hard to playing the X-Men game as a kid.

Funny you should mention that. I don't know if you're talking about X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, but it was the Psylocke sprite from that game that influenced me from the start. Glad you dig it!

It was X-Men, the arcade game from Konami. This made me think of Storm's walk from that game.

I dabbled a bit in animation in my school days way back when (I had plans of getting a degree in game art and design, but it didn't work out.) It can be tricky at first, but once one gets the concept and studies enough reference, it comes together logically. Make one set of poses that work, then copy them but switch the limbs and you've got a walk cycle.

I do want to give her a full range of movements. I've roughed out ideas for her running, crouching, jumping, executing many kinds of kick attacks and of course, shooting. :)

I won't say it's easy--took quite a bit of self-teaching to even get to this point, but the challenge is making the animations smooth by creating enough frames and posing her effectively. Since this is built from a character rig in Flash that I just move the parts around with (which means little to no redrawing), it's just trial and error with the poses, not really hard per se.

I've been wanting to take on the challenge of making better animations and more characters for some time now. It's one of my numerous passionate interests.
