Nia Black Cover 1 by Dualmask Nia Black Cover 1 by Dualmask
This city is home to exceptional people blessed or cursed with abilities through scientific or biological experimentation, abilities that have changed the face of law enforcement. For every simple gang banger or convenience store robber, there’s a being who can throw cars like bags of trash, deflect bullets with a wave of the hand, or leap across the rooftops as if playing hopscotch.

The business of creating tools to deal with these “Exceptionals” is a lucrative one. One of the largest, most powerful defense contractors in the world, Corp Hudson, specializes in the development of weaponry for law enforcement and the military for the sole purpose of taking down the most powerful of targets. Corp Hudson seeks to corner the market on developing combat tools by taking their research to the next level: the development of human-weapon hybrids strong enough to defeat any enemy force. But before Corp Hudson can move forward with their ambitions of creating the perfect superhuman army, they need to study one unique subject…a subject that, unlike all other Exceptionals, was mysteriously born with her abilities.

She uses her abilities for one purpose: to make as much money as she can by sabotaging the efforts of Corp Hudson and companies like it, doing what she can to keep the corporations from dominating the world with their oppressive power. The streets know her as the most dangerous, most beautiful, and most elusive bandit of them all, the criminal underworld’s top go-to girl, Nia Black. But Corp Hudson has another name for her:

Target Omega.

And Corp Hudson's Executive Security guards just caught her stealing the unfinished prototype of a weapon that could take down any Exceptional with the greatest of ease.

On this image I should have finished a long time ago (originally drawn in 2009!), I'm trying out a new approach to my digital art, comics in particular...high contrast black with flat colors.

Here's the noir version:

That is one lovely rear end she's got, but I think this could look even cooler if she had highlights on her skin too.

Thanks, but I did it this way intentionally. Normally I put highlights on my forms but I was going for a different approach here. Turned out I didn't like it with color but the approach worked very well in black and white, as the image linked in my comments shows I think. :)

Sure, I don't mind if this pic is shared as long as I'm given proper credit (if you add a link to belovedweapon.com, that would be great). As for joining the group, I'm not really a Flickr user...

I've never been better...and I honestly mean that. :)

I plan to sell books once I have enough pages done. I've made more than what's on my site so far, but less than what I need to put out a decent comic book.

Thanks! I saw your comment and approved it. :) I'm glad you like it. I used Wordpress with Comicpress--followed this tutorial right here. I still have a lot to learn about designing the site; there are some appearance things I want to tweak, but I'm no good at CSS so that'll have to wait for another day.

Wow man! She's beautiful. I'm a fan of the bold blacks. You pulled this off very well.
Haha, will we see Nia wearing Jet's boots in an upcoming image?

I actually considered "merging" Nia and Jet into one character back when I couldn't choose between the two. But no, I put the boot in the shot here to make a little connection between Nia's universe and Jet's. It's more like an Easter egg than anything else. :D Glad you like it!

Haha, cool. I'd still like to see them meet up though. Unless you've already done a peice like that. Hit me up with a link if you have.

Nope, sorry, haven't done that one yet, though I've had some ideas. Nia shooting at Jet, Jet kicking the bullets or blowing them up with the exhaust from her rocket boots or something like that... but I'm so caught up in my graphic novel now that I have to put those unrelated ideas in the "something to do when I'm feeling burned out" pile. :D

instead of giving you a compliment, I'm going to say something so homoerotic, it'll make you feel uncomfortable: she makes me want to lick my computer screen.

Hey, I don't even know what to say or where should I even start.

That catsuit or whatever you call it, it definetly compliments her shapes and curves  the lighting effect improves it further.

Her facial expression is very finely and professionally made.

And I don't know what's about to happen next in that picture, but I doubt she won't have any problems dealing with her enemies :la:

Why can't I :+fav: this twice? =D

Well you can always fave the black and white version too. ;) Thanks a lot for all the praise. That this image is so well received is bittersweet for me because I drew the original sketch back in 2009, which means I'm starting to hit diminishing returns on my practicing...my improvement is slowing down. That just means it's time to create something real... :)

Graphic novel, video game...something that constitutes a real project, not just random pictures for comments and favorites.

Thanks! I think I'm getting closer to a balance between fast production and color that works for me. Even though I like my shiny, glowy cel-shading too, this suits Nia's setting a lot better.

It adds a suitably powerful and interesting feel to your images. I think it works well- the strong contrast suits the personalities and actions you're writing and drawing.

Thanks! The reason the idea came to me was because I was reading somewhere that black carries a lot of emotional weight, which suits Nia's story perfectly. So I thought: add more black.

Very cool I've always lved your work man. However I would have to say be careful with the head and hands. Her head looks abit large for her body, while her hands are kinda to small. I make the mistake to sometimes. =)

I actually want Nia's head to look a bit big because she's so short (5'2") but I agree about the hands. This is an old one that I probably should have touched up a bit more, but after two years of finally finishing this simple drawing, I need to move forward. ^^; Thanks!

I guess this one could be called...Assume the Position, Ms. Black!!! :giggle:

Cool stuff...I like what you're going for with the new coloring approach. I would like to see some highlights on her skin, but without them does give her skin tone a richer look with the contrasting dark/black colors. :D
