Nia Black 2008 Revisited - COPICs by Dualmask Nia Black 2008 Revisited - COPICs by Dualmask
Felt my neutral gray Copics were being neglected so I decided out of the blue to print out my old Nia 2008 line art and shade it at work today. Pretty fun.

The background stands out in this piece (at least, to me). I like your use of shading and highlights to "shape" the buildings, especially the windows.

Thanks! To think I originally drew this some five years ago...I don't know if I have it in me to draw like this anymore.

When you say that, what exactly do you mean? What part is beyond you now?

Well, I was thinking about the fact that I drew that whole background by hand. It's not that impressive, but I did take the time to get my perspective right. Nowadays, it's more of a pain to me to spend time on backgrounds--any environments in my current work are usually referenced from Sketchup models I make...or download.

Plus I noticed that I rarely draw figures that large anymore. Most of my work, that's not part of a comic page, features full figures, probably due to the fact that I'm doing all my drawing on a 10-inch screen nowadays.

All in all, my artistic habits are changing. Not sure if they're changing for the better.

Thanks! Though, the base drawing is nearly five years old now...and I'm not certain whether the way I draw now is better, worse, or just different.

I'm doing great myself! Finally settled on an idea to pursue, getting a few commissions here and there and I'm enjoying my work more.

I read somewhere that you can't wait for inspiration to come so you can change... YOU have to change in order for inspiration will come. You can't wait for it, you have to create it!

Oh, you really meant field...I'm only a professional in the sense that I've managed to get people to give me money to draw (or color) for them on numerous occasions. My day job is office worker for the US government.

I here you man. I don't think that will be a problem for you though Jonathan. Your consistently producing professional grade art. I know it's digital but I believe if you applied some of those same techniques to your traditional stuff it could work. Plus look at this piece. It proves you know your way around the markers.

Love the copic work. If you get a chance, get the warm greys it will really make her pop off the page. I got my copics from merriartist. What's awesom eis the refills for the pens are so cheap.

Thanks! I pondered buying some warm grays today, but I held back and asked myself how serious I am about marker work. I do most of my work digitally so I have to really be sure the markers are worth the investment. I've spent lots of money on materials that just faded into obscurity (or ended up in my kids' hands) so I have to give it a lot of thought.

Still, I haven't totally shut down the idea. The warm grays would definitely have been great for her skin.

I get into modes where I collect things. Like when we moved my husband had to lug 12 - 14 boxes of stuff for scrapbooking. So he won't allow me to "collect" anymore lol. Copics have replaced it and that he feels is worth it, because if I don't use them for a little bit, I can always go back to using them. They refill so they aren't wasted if the ink runs out. So good investment. My husband even says that I should do copics over digital ... :(

Hey, it's good enough for Adam Hughes and Mark Brooks, among others. There's a part of me that feels my art might be better traditional in some ways, though it's hard to say for sure.

You're right...even if they dry out, I can get the refills from somewhere. Might just give them a shot...warm grays and cool ones.

Really good, solid background. Just the right amount of detail and stylisation. It really does set the scene.

Hot damn figure as well, of course ;)

Thanks! Even though it's an oldie, this was some of my proudest line work ever and I had a lot of fun practicing marker work on it...funny because I could never find the motivation to color it digitally.

Thanks! I like the idea of shading everything I draw with Copics--but I'd be too afraid of them running dry during an inconvenient time...
