Jet Freefall by Dualmask Jet Freefall by Dualmask

Now in color!

Today's doodle. Another one of Jet. No real story behind it... doodled the pose in thumbnail form, blew it up, drew it up. Hope you like it. :)

I missed out commenting on your linework for this pic before.

What made this a strong piece was the solidity of the composition- I don't just mean the character and use of perspective (which is strong)- but rather the integral "whole" of the scene. It's easily readable, and the primary shapes lead the eye to the secondary and tertiary ones.

Your use of tiny thumbnails to form structure and composition is a really good one.

Thanks! I know it's a crotch shot and I know a lot of people faved it for that reason alone, but I could not shake the feeling that there was more than that. I really should know why this worked in my own understanding without question, but your analysis helps a lot and I agree with it. For this one, it was definitely something about the sum of its parts that came together well.

I've been continuing to use my graph paper thumbnail construction method too. If it ain't broke...

Thanks for your interest in my work; unfortunately I don't really enter contests. I'm generally working on personal projects and commissions most of the time.

Thanks! I wasn't even thinking about what direction she was going in when I first drew it. ^^; She could also just be somersaulting, being viewed from above. Who knows...

I hate to burst your bubble, but as a frequent photographer of women's professional wrestling, this picture is so popular because it is a crotch shot. The boys LOVE crotch shots! lol Seriously, I really like this image too. It is a unique perspective open to many different interpretations and thus gets the imagination going, which I think makes for good art. I say there is some villainess who is about to get a surprise as she wonder where Jet could have gone. GERONIMOOOOOO!!! Or maybe her shoe boosters cut out from a malfunction, but Jet will land on the villainess hard anyway, winning the day almost by accident.

Sorry...I just re-read what you said (I rushed through it the first time). It appears I took your comment the wrong way. I guess I'm just a little on edge because I'm almost expecting some heckler to come out and say "Dude, get over yourself, it's not THAT great..." as if I don't have reason to be proud of this drawing. You do make a good point.

I loved your little story there. Jet is kind of known for causing all kinds of damage without noticing it, so your scenario isn't entirely unfounded. :D

I think it looks decent enough, though I admit I wasn't putting a lot of effort into the accuracy of it; just trusted my instincts.

Plus I'm nearly finished the digital inks at this point.

It's a great work, I could totally see this getting coloured and whatnot. However, as one nitpicking point, her left foot is really off :P I love the rest of it though, great work. Oh and sorry to have voted 'unfair' on that critique, but that's not a critique at all, it's a comment with ratings :P

Keep up the great work!

Thanks! I noticed a few issues with this sketch after spending some time looking over it since posting it. I do intend to color it. I was going to color right over the pencils, but now because of the little issues like that foot, I may have to ink it digitally to make the fixes more cleanly.

I think the issue of the foot is solved pretty easily, it's a matter of changing the 'roundness' of the boot. But yeah, when you're going to colour it, you might be better off inking it first.

this AWESOME!!!!!!! it's also not a usual angle in your work, usually you approach your characters from more direct angles but you did this in an AMAZING way, i love it and please get it colored sometime!!

Lookin' good! It kinda has the vibe that suggests it would make a pretty good comic cover.

Pretty cool how sometime even simple doodles can turn out to be oh-so-impressive. :)

Thanks! I didn't think that at the time, but you're right, this would make a great cover. The challenge of making Jet Dancer images is that they really must show her boots to present her properly, and that can be more challenging than it may appear all the time. But this works.

The key I think is that I did a tiny thumbnail and instead of drawing something based on it, I literally blew it up (on a copier) and drew right over it, preserving the energy of the original plan. It's the closest I ever came to drawing something exactly the way I perceived it in my head, I think. :)
