Jet Dancer Redesign by Dualmask Jet Dancer Redesign by Dualmask
Been thinking about giving Jet a new approach. It occurred to me that much of the problems I have with giving Jet something to do besides jump around looking cute is because of the core of her design. Many parts of the usual Jet Dancer are awkward to work around in a story, at least for me. So I decided to play around with her look and her overall design to make her more balanced.

Never mind the increased coverage--this work has nothing to do with any concerns I had about my work being "too sexy". The real change is to her boots and gauntlets, which I've designed to be more unified. There's no logical reason she should rely only on kicks; her gauntlets should be just as useful in combat as her greaves... yes, greaves.

I changed the rainbow glow to something more definite. I tried to create a look like the gauntlets and greaves were pulsating with energy from within, but I don't know how successful I was. Maybe I'll restore the rainbow.

I'm not too fond of the style of the outfit--I'm not big on massive amounts of detail, but I could probably add something to it to spice it up.

EDIT: Did some playing around with her look. Jet Dancer's appearance is always in flux. It's just better to state that she doesn't have an "official" outfit...but I'm definitely happy with the gauntlets and greaves.

Pretty much everything else is vintage Jet. Heterchromatic eyes, long hair, curves...some things never change.

What do you think?

I like both, actually! I kind of like the multi-colored glow on her boots and gauntlets but the other approach does suit the new outfit. Somewhere in between with those lights might be interesting. I think if you interchange both and play with her costume here and there it'll be a fun variety and keep her interesting. And pft, women love clothes, she doesn't need one set costume. ;) She might not have an official outfit but she does have a signature look.

She might not have an official outfit but she does have a signature look. Exactly. She can wear a bikini or a full body suit and still unmistakably be Jet. I guess that means she's a pretty good character design. :D Thanks!

Wow man, look at Jet. I'm feeling the new suits. I like your decision to have her not wear the same suit all the time. It fits her character in my oppinion.

I think so too. Jet is an unusual character design and she should have unusual traits for a super hero. :)

I love the new tweaks! I think the covered legs make sense. With all that energy spouting around, I think she'd want a little protection of her legs (but that's just me! lol) I do love how you have the energy pulsing from within. I think you clearly showed that idea and it IS pretty unique. As for the colors, I had a thought. If you imagine her as animated, imagine a flow of energy constantly moving up and down the greaves and gauntlets, covering the entire color spectrum, so you'd see a reddish glow moving from the top of her arm down to her hand and then continuing down her leg, then back to her arm again (with a constant low hum in the background noise). That way you could show all different colors coming from each 'opening.' As I look back at the picture that may be what you have done, but my tired eyes are having trouble seeing it. At rest, the colors might be stable, but once she gets moving, the colors would flow more rapidly until, at full power, they would just appear as a bright white light beaming from her arms and legs. Just my own imaginaton.

Well, for reasons I won't get into here, Jet doesn't really need physical protection as much as the average woman would. The lights pulsating more or less rapidly depending upon what she was doing was part of my original plan for Jet. I even tried to incorporate it into my game sprite, although it's not really obvious. Of course, I'm moving more toward static art than animation but I can figure out ways to illustrate the lights changing based on her emotional state during battle, including going full white when she's pushed to the limit like you suggested. Great ideas. Thanks! :)

Love 'em both...the gauntlets and boots look awesome!!! Although, I would agree with the comments of others...I think that both versions would look great with a belt and a choker of some sort around her neck, but that's just me.

And I'm with you in saying that women wear more than just one outfit...I like the idea of her switching up her look.

Thanks a lot. :) A lot of people like the idea of a choker, but that's not going to happen. I drew it on my sketch and it just didn't work for me. I like the whole bare uninterrupted skin between the top of her head and her chest. I may do a belt though. And yeah, this is just a couple of the many outfits Jet has in her closet. ;)

No prob. I saw in a few of your replies to other folks that you were anti choker. Me personally, I find them to be very sexy on a woman, but I guess it's that need to fill negative space. Almost EVERY costumed female has something attractive attention to their necks, but in this case it's good to break from the norms. I can't really think of any mainstream character that has a tube-top/strapless costume that does keep their necks/shoulders bare.

The design work you've done unifies the look well. Her gauntlets and boots have nice commonality, but also look good in of themselves. They appear to flow well- the hierarchy of detail. As for extra detail... hmm. I think we just have to see her in action. Maybe the current detail level is fine- perhaps the current hierarchy of form allows for extra detail later on. Hard to say- comic panels would answer that question well.

Overall, it's a well-conceived design.

Thanks...what stops me from making a decent show of Jet Dancer in this costume, or any other, is my struggles with a story. To be honest, I'd rather not add much of anything more to her at all, now that I think of it, and I'm starting to get that whole 'if it ain't broke don't fix it feeling that *JericaWinters stated. I need to stop worrying about how Jet looks and focus more on what she's going to do.

the rainbow look does seem appealing, but from a coloring over and over again stand point i'd go w/ the more definitive color selection. she apparently is not built for stealth missions though if she is going to be glowing so much, even if it's just a subtle Tron-like glow :P but i like the look a lot. as for adding something more? i would suggest either a belt or a choker(like wonder woman) in the same style as the greaves/gauntlets. any more than one of those would add TOO much i think. personally i think the choker would look cool.

Yeah, Jet Dancer isn't a stealth character. She's a jump-in-and-blow-sh!t-up kind of character. :D It's really not hard to make the glow effect over and over; I use a preset Photoshop gradient for it every single time--takes seconds to do.

I already decided against a choker, but I'm experimenting with a belt on my sketch. If it's a loose-fitting belt that rests around her hips as opposed to being tightly wound on her waist, it might be cool.

I need to come up with a comic for her real quick, something not too deep but enough to show her in action for a few pages. That's the only way I'll really know what works and what doesn't.

While the rainbow-glow is an improvement - it definitely suits her better - I gotta go with the left one for her actul costume. I don't have issues with anybody showing a little skin, but he's gonna be boosting around all over the show - the hot pants and boob-tube combination just ain't gonna hold her. The other one is strapless too, sure - but with only that one area of physics-defiance it sort of balances out. Eh, maybe it's just me.

She certainly wouldn't be the first comic/video game or otherwise fictional character wearing an outfit that shouldn't physically work. My reasoning for the first outfit have nothing to do with functionality or realism or even covering her up, I just like the streamlined "might as well be wearing nothing at all" skin-tightness of it. That and I've recently found myself quite fond of yoga pants and other form-fitting athletic gear, and it's integrated itself into my work. =p But it seems more folks preferred the rainbow glow, so that'll be here to stay.

haha, it's true, plenty of costumes out there that shouldn't work - but then I don't tend to much like them either, so I imagine it's just my tastes. Don't get me wrong, I'm by no means against nudity or near-nudity in art - just something I picked up in my own preferences I think. All the same, the artwork is fantastic as usual.

Hey, buddy! I couldn't help myself so I played around with the more skin-baring image even though it violates some of the tenets you set forth on how you want her to look! Something was screaming at me to drop the booty shorts (not literally of course) and do a sort of strappy redesign on her. Well, I wanted to satisfy my curiosity, so I did! Feel free to adopt, borrow, revise or dismiss! I had fun messing around with her...urrrr....you know what I mean! lol! JD's looking fly man! [link]

I do like this one but--you might hate me for saying this--it makes me think "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." I prefer the previous outfit because of the multicolored lights and the cool floating rings on her arms. Just my 2 cents.

I could restore both the arm rings and the rainbow and still keep the main things I wanted to fix, mainly the gauntlets and greaves. I had no idea folks actually liked those details. Thanks.
