Dualmask 2012 by Dualmask Dualmask 2012 by Dualmask
Roughed up a sketch of my mascot on a whim today, then I figured I'd use it to test my speed. So I scanned the rough sketch, digitally inked it in less than an hour (about the length of two episodes of Heroic Age on Netflix) and then laid the flats in another 20 minutes I think. The shading took longer, but I think the whole digital process was under two hours total.

Dualmask :icondualmask:, of course.

Wow, one of my friends has a character frighteningly similar to Dualmask (coincidence!) called Charon AKA the Bone Breaker

Also a staff wielding vigilante!

Love the staff pose and character design.
Left hand could use some nighlights to pick out the position of his fingers and the tread of the boots seems a little off position on the right foot, but these are just nitpicks. Overall great :)

Wow, that is frightening. Same basic color scheme and everything. Guess great minds think alike...

You're right about the little issues; I was rushing this one a bit, trying to find a finer balance between speed and quality. Thanks.

Your welcome man. Looks like your quality is pretty balanced to me. I would love to be able to produce something of this quality with the speed you've posted here.

It may have been a test of your speed, but overall it is a very strong piece. I like the power pose, and the musculature is well-defined. Dualmask in this image has a sense of realism- in that his physique is humanly possible, but at the same time is nicely abstracted. I like the simplified, yet still suitably interesting look of his design and the dramatic silhouette cast by his pose.

Thanks! I was pretty happy with this drawing when I did it, so much so that I want to put this on a T-shirt. :D

Thanks! I only wish I could get myself to do more with him than draw him looking tough and write short stories. But the motivation to draw him in action just doesn't come...

Looks pretty good. You might in the future remember to keep the calves smaller than the thighs. It was fun seeing your avatar change a few time yesterday. lol

Thanks. I didn't think about it at the time I was drawing it, but I think I like the calves this way. I know it's not anatomically correct, but I'm worrying less about that these days and worrying more about energy in my drawings. I was instinctively driven to make them larger here than they were in my sketch. Not that I'm excusing a flaw as "style" but...just not worrying about it.

Still seeking that perfect avatar...the search goes on but I'm content for now. =p

All good. I'll stay quiet about anatomy issues now. It's nice to work things out to where you like them, I think that's what it's all about.

I wouldn't want you to do that. Do let me know if something is terribly, horribly off. Not everything is intentional. I would never have realized I drew that old BrandX commission with two left hands if someone didn't say anything, for example. [link] I don't want anyone to ever be afraid to speak their mind about my art, and my response is going to reflect that particular piece, not my work overall. Plus you're one of the folks I can trust to be straight up about male anatomy, which is something I'm only moderately good at compared to females.

To be honest I think I like the oversized calves because I've been drawing a lot of WCL work lately and I've gotten accustomed to emphasizing their lower legs because of the way I draw those particular characters. That's why the look doesn't bother me here.

Awesomesauce! Good to see your namesake in action once again. Not much else to add here, other than the fact that I think your little exercise/challenge appears to have been a fairly productive one. Well done!

Not bad! I'd say your commission work has upped your ability to bust out the inking. ;) And hey, you got a new icon out of it...! :>

Thanks! Yeah, I decided that there was only one way to deal with an overwhelming commission workload, and that was to work harder and faster to get it done. I've definitely become faster.

And I've been wanting an avatar of my namesake character based on an actual good drawing for a while. Stylized icons are nice and my other drawings are nice, but I have a character named Dualmask and I should be able to draw a decent pic of him and make an avatar out of it, dangit! :shakefist: Ahem. I'm calm now. =p

Dualmask versus Jet Dancer! This made me want to see it happen :) Looks nice, except the hand on the right looks slightly off.

Hmm, Dualmask vs. Jet Dancer, eh... :plotting:

Glad you like it! I thought his hand was too small in my sketch so I resized it, but it seems I may have resized it too much. Oh well.

Yeah, I made him up a long time ago, around the time I first saw Two-Face in Batman TAS, and the Bo staff just came to me. Didn't discover Slade until later, and by then I was just used to giving my guy the weapon so it stuck. Thanks. :)

Dualmask's allegiances are based on who can pay him. He'll kill the corrupt, but he also has a sense of honor and won't harm innocents or those who do good. He's conflicted.
