Deluge - Flash Flood by Dualmask Deluge - Flash Flood by Dualmask
Update: I think I made the water a little less crappy.

This was sitting on my drive flatted and ignored for far too long so I decided to go ahead and force something out. I don't know how I feel about the water, but I really didn't know what to do with it, so I just followed my instincts.

Following in the footsteps of it's Jennifer Halberd, call sign Deluge of the Polaris team in my WEAPON Combat League concept. Her WEAPON, or battle suit, has the unorthodox power to control water.

The tidied up water looks good to me- it shouldn't be too realistic or it will clash with the character. Speaking of the character, the bubbles on her hands are neat.

Glad you like it! This character is always a challenge to deal with because making a character manipulate water...without getting too unbelievable with it...is something I have trouble wrapping my mind around.

Maybe I should just treat her like an ATLA water bender and be done with it. ;p

I hope that isn't drain water she's using. That would smell... :XD:
I like the fins on her outfit. Very aquatic.

I really like the character and the suit concept! Not sure about the huge bow ... a little too anime-cutesy for my taste ... but that is MY taste and not yours! In the face of global warming this is a very good power to have! Saving the world and all that. What are those intriguing tubes on her hips?

Thanks! Some folks love the bow, others not so much, but trust me, it works well for the character given her personality. The tubes on her hips are energy torpedo launchers, just some additional weaponry so she can actually do damage when water's not enough.

I've been meaning to get to this sooner, but laziness got in the way... =P

Anyways, it's good to see the sketch I was really fond of get the digital treatment from you. I believe this would also be the first time I've commented on your work since you've tweaking your coloring style, which is quite noticeable here. Honestly, it takes some getting used to in regards to the softer highlights, but I do think it's cool that you've been experimenting with the process.

As for the water, I think it would have came out better if you simply tried to blend the colors in more, making all of the stokes look more unified. Just my two cents, though. Still, it's great to see Deluge again, as 'bubbly' as ever (no pun originally intended). :)

P.S.: I still want to call her Marina...

Thanks! I'm not 100% sold on this coloring approach, but now that I have yet another Wacom in my possession, I can't help but get a little looser and freer with my shading these days. It feels like a missed opportunity otherwise, but I still have a long way to go before it's a viable replacement for my cel shading approach.

I'm just going to have to redo the water. It's really bad, isn't it? Fortunately, I do still have the image broken up into layers so there's nothing stopping me from practicing. Mari--er, Deluge spends a lot of time using her water powers, so if I'm going to be drawing her, I need to get the water right, no two ways about it. =p

Perhaps "Marina" fits a more overarching aquatic theme whereas Deluge is based solely on water. Now you've got me doubting myself again...I would hold a poll, but I don't know if many people will care.

Don't stress over the name thing. Again, it's just one of those things that I happen to remember, and I tend to dust off those things in my brain at times without trying. Deluge is perfectly fine, though. In fact, I feel a little bad for even bringing it up now...

And as for the water, it's not exactly a major distraction, but I do think it would be a big plus if you CAN find something to do with it. Water effects, when well done, always seem to make such a great impression on a piece, so I would definitely encourage looking for the direction needed to improve its look.

...And if you're going to re-work the water anyway, I'd also like to see it reflect on the character this time around. Just a suggestion, though.

The water's an improvement. :)

Oh yeah... I suppose I should tell you that my last comment was actually more about seeing droplets of water on Deluge or some sort of 'interaction' like that (unless her WEAPON is supposed to repel water or something), but the stronger rim lighting makes an impact.

Nicely done.

Thanks. The water is supposed to be rising from behind her and flooding around, not actually hitting her but ready to smash on her opponent who is presumably facing opposite. It's a tricky thing to implement that I admit could have been expressed more effectively.

Well, if that's the case, it makes sense. My take was that with a character who uses water as a form of offense, it would have been a nice touch to see a bit of water impact the user, too. Nowhere near a flaw, though. Just a preference from someone who didn't fully understand the concept. lol

Love the design of her suit and the hip mounted water canons (I assume). Also love the understated fins on her costume, adds flair without looking impractical on land. Not sold on the giant bow though! Nice work and good call on the texturing of her suit :)

Glad you like it! I'm especially glad you like her costume design. The bow is meant to display her bubbly, somewhat childish personality. It used to be smaller...maybe I'll shrink it in future illustrations, but it's definitely there to stay.

Neat! I like the added detail of the texture on top of the gold parts of the suit that was a cool idea!
