The Shadow Shard Page 48 by dSana The Shadow Shard Page 48 by dSana

Finally, Page 48!

Those of you who've read The Journal may see that I am not following the storyline closely: what Twilight is reading to Flurry is a short, simplified version of the Heart chapter fit for the youngest audience; the continuation that Spike "sees" is something different altogether - more will follow on the next page. If you haven't read this book, don't worry, only my comic version is important.

(Also, I would like to remind you that Celestia (and Luna by proxy) are Flurry's grandaunts, because Celestia has adopted Cadance as her niece in one of the chapter books.)

PS: It has come to my attention that last panel wasn't clear - talking to Princesses is not Spike, but another dragon, owner of the Heart. I have changed his eye colour & colour-coded his dialogue. Hope that helps.

My Patrons could read this page two days ago. Big thanks Heart  for your generous support, folks!

Unbelievable. Having seen the latest page I have only this to say to Cekestia and Luna:

Gollum Icon You're a liar and thief!!

Well, there's also a hint that it was actually a good idea to take the egg ^^

But what about his brother? Spike was all he had left after their mother died in the cold, so why do something as cruel as steal him away (from how it appears, as a hostage to keep him from reclaiming the heart)? And also lying about the story to make him look like the thief.

The sisters really don't seem like the heroes here.

Because they had no choice. Crystal Heart was Empire's only hope. I hope to explore this story more in the Epilogue.

The heart is understandable given the facts but why take Spike too knowing he had a brother protecting him? That's what I want to know, though I'm sure you'll tell us soon enough.

Might be a bit spoiler-y, I try to avoid specifics:

I feel like the situation is a bit more complex than that: The crystal ponies probably found the heart independently and used the magic within to protect them from the cold, then this dragon stole it back which put the ponies at danger. Now from Celestia's and Luna's perspective this looks like ill intended just because they don't know the whole story. Also the question remains: Who should have the heart? Someone who has an attachment for solely emotional reasons  to it or a whole kingdom which relies on it's magic (which doesn't even seem to get consumed through it) to protect them. With proper communication this could've been solved better just because the Crystal Kingdom would protect the heart with their live ensuring to the dragon that it's save. (and maybe even grant visiting rights? ;D)

The problem is Spike is hearing the story now (on the latest page) from what appears to be the spirit of his mother. And even if the heart would benefit the ponies more, the sisters still stole Spike from his only brother as leverage effectively making him their hostage if his brother ever tried to take back their mother's heart.

The heart can be forgiven for the crystal ponies sake, but kidnapping Spike from his only family who for all we know loved him dearly, is unforgivable if they really did do it to keep his brother away from the heart. This is less about the heart and more about Spike.

Ouch, they murderized Spike's mum and used his grand'ma heart to protect the Crystal Empire.

I feel my Rampage theory becoming real. XD

No, no, they didn't murder her >,< She was dead. But they did take her heart and Spike's egg from her descendant.

This isn't something I haven't seen or heard of before.  Sometimes stories are altered to give a more "preferred" ending or outcome.  Either because it's too scary, too serious, or casts someone in a bad light, a story can be changed.  A comforting lie to cover up a unwanted truth.

I bet Sombra is probably laughing.  He didn't have to change anything; he just had to let the truth be heard.

It happened a lot in Europe. Wars re-written, battles forgotten, brutal invaders turned into saviours, leaders edited out from the photographs.

But at this instance, it was indeed an easy one.

Just a little thing to note going forwards...this is not a criticism, but most people don't realize this: when people hear "thy" and "thou" they think it sounds very regal and formal.  But in reality, it was actually the opposite: it was informal version "you" and "your."

So you would say "Your shoes are untied, sir."

But "Thy shoes art untied, buddy."

Paradoxical, isn't it?  People today tend to use it wrong, and flip it around.  For example, in Star Wars Darth Vader asks the Emperor "What is thy bidding?"  Which would be like saying "What can I do for you, buddy?"  That would probably get him killed.

Not sure this distinction matters, or whether you were unaware of it.  Formal or informal could work in this dialogue.  Actually, I think informal makes this scene more powerful, because it implies they have less respect for the dragon.  But regardless, it's an interesting thing to note.

It came across to make as just old fashioned. It does actually communicate a certain level of distance.

Well, that's certainly interesting! I didn't know. However more then regal, I wanted to show it's old, as in 1000 years ago - this is why dragon also uses it.

Well actually things like thy are indeed less polite but they are not informal. Instead they are more commanding and would be something a parent says to a child. It's sort of weird therefore for Spike to use it that way. For Luna it makes sense for her to use that tone towards the ponies of equestria as they are below her. However she wouldn't use it towards her sister who is an equal.
It's sort of similar how a mother's title changes from "mommy" to "mom" to "mother" as a child grows older.

Also using Thy towards someone above you like for example a child using it towards a parent is considered very rude. Kind of like that the child is challenging the parent's authority and suggesting the parent is beneath them.

It's not Spike who uses it; it's the other dragon. And it's to empathise it happened in the past; not to confirm the status of the characters.

I figured.  Just thought you might want to know going forwards.

I've always found this fact so amusing, because we think people from the past sound so primmed up and formal, but if they heard us talk they would think exactly the same thing.

I can't say whether or not I accept the whole royal hostage thing. But it seems as though not only take back something that was never the ponies to begin with I'm still not certain I'm not going to question how the heart came into Pony Hooves to begin with at this time but to not only Force the one who's took it from them to give it back and to take the last unborn child of the dragon from whom the heart came as a hostage that is fairly Calais to begin with. I'm guessing that she and Luna attempted to hatch the egg several times winding failure his why she made it test for extremely gifted unicorns that she saw and her school to teach them to accept failure. And on the off-chance that one of them manage to hatch the Wayward egg and her custody she could use the hatchling once they reach adulthood is a bargaining chip to prove the royal sisters Goodwill to the dragon whom they had to beat to retrieve the stolen hurt in the first place. Honestly so much more like a black mask / Lex Luthor since I doubt if half the people reading this with know who black mask is depiction of Celestia then else. And that's before we get into Sombra knowing about this from the get-go I his shadow the narration to spike

Fair enough!

At the end of the day, they had to make sure Crystal Empire won't perish and Crystal ponies won't die; but asking the Royal Sisters about their version of this story would be a good thing to do.

As for the inspiration, I was looking at Ned Stark and Theon Greyjoy. The latter was taken away as a child to ensure House Greyjoy will not rebel again, but  Stark family treated him fairly and gave him education, family to grow up with and proper status.
