From the zeppelin’s height, Sir Pentious and Molly watched the dark cloud Roo had hurled over the battlefield, an unnatural swell of shadow spreading through the air like poison. It wasn’t simple smoke. It was deeper than that. Older. Something that could swallow light itself.
A moment before, through the periscope and the trembling windows, they’d seen Charlie’s hand lace with Eddie’s. Even from up here they’d felt the Deus Ex Machina bracer’s vibration; an azure glow pulsing like a living heart, like it was promising an ending and a rebirth all at once. Then, without warning, everything had vanished.
Darkness devoured it all.
Where there had been shapes, color, movement, there was only a solid absence now, one black stain that reflected nothing. No signal. No glow. No sound that could reassure them.
