Light Ermine Moth - underside

Light Ermine Moth, Spilosoma canescens, again, but this time showing off the underside marking, and the vivid red under her wings.

She's not dead. But as I suspected, a poisonous moth was much more complacent about being handled and posed than an edible one would be. I could have collected them by the handful, and they'd probably have just sat there.

they don't just advertise their poisonous visually, either - they also give off ultrasonic warnings, so bats won't eat them :)

thats so cool :squee: i just got a death head moth which is my favourite and i found out that they attack bee hives to get to the honey but the bees don't attack them because they mimic the bees smell XD that and they produce a high pitched squeal when irritated :meow: XD but i like the shape of ermine moths kinda like an arrow head kinda shape XD
