Digital Sketch Work in Progress - Current as of April 30, 2013

Well, my Intro to ZBrush class may be over, but that doesn't mean the learning is due to stop!

In between working on my 3ds Max homework, I booted up ZBrush again and continued work on a sitting creature that is slowly taking shape into a particular gryphon side-character from my story-stuff, and I've attached one of the journal pages where I sketched him last year. You can see him here:

And the head is from an initial bust sculpt here:

He's still got quite a ways to go, but he'll hopefully be my second full-body sculpt.

Super awesome! It's cool to see the progress on a lot of your work, starting from sketches to full-on 3d models, it's very inspiring and a reminder (to myself at the least) to keep those visions inside your head and keep the strong, positive beliefs that great artwork starts with a single step, and even if something doesn't turn out the way you wanted it can put you on a new path towards something better. I've been working/struggling on just sketching and not trying to create a finished piece from the get-go, that way my drawings don't look "stiff", learning everyday!

Thanks so much for the compliments! I'm glad you're enjoying seeing the sketches sometimes shift into 3D! I'm really enjoying having the opportunity to try to re-envision some of my characters in three dimensions and share them with you!

Your words are totally true, to: the first step to becoming a better artist (or better at anything, really), is being willing to take those first precious steps, and know that while we create might not be awesome right out of the gate, the more we practice and the harder we strive to improve, the more we can learn to apply to further pieces and get THAT much closer to achieving what we see in our mind's eye.

For your own stuff: just keep on sketching: I'll be cheering you on! If you are looking to help the flow of your figure, I also HIGHLY recommend the books by Vilppu: [link]

I'm excited but OH GEEZE INTIMIDATED by those feathers! I want to try and make them true-ish to life without driving myself mad, ideally. But I AM pumped to finally realize this guy in 3D! He's been in my head for SO many years now.
