This was a little sketch I did during Comic Con shortly after attending the Firefly 10th Anniversary panel. The panel struck all sorts of chords in me, and led me to continuing pages and pages of notes on my own story stuff, and somewhere in there, I started jotting down stuff about character backstories and histories. It reminded me that everyone, even "heroes," have vulnerable moments where they need to hold each other up.

This is one of those moments.

Tiny 1.5 by 3.5 inch sketch done in graphite and Copic Multiliner on toned paper with additional color added in Photoshop CS5.

I never can figure out how you can pack such a small space with so much detail. They do have a lovely curl around each other, maybe because I have been on this journey reading their story I find this moment rare. They never have an easy time in any part of their journey (just like in Firefly/Serenity,) it is hard for them to let go in any moment and leave themselves exposed. Oberon always reminded me of Jayne in his attitude. Using humor to diffuse a situation is what Firefly was good at, it was smart and quick and your work embodies that as well. I know this had to be a moment of pure exhausting pain for it to happen. I think you are bringing such fragility with the delicate curves, that you just want to leave them alone and let them rest awhile.

It's strange for me sometimes, because some of my smallest pieces I feel have the most "life" to them, if that makes any sense.

And indeed: since you know of their journey, you can understand this isn't by any stretch of the imagination a common sight, nor a romantic bond. Both of them have had truly hard lives in very different ways, and while they have strength and composure (and humor), to carry themselves, in rare instances they are laid bare and raw, and in the best of those times, are there to support each other, even if simply by being a silent shoulder to support the other.

I can definitely understand drawing comparisons between Oberon and Jayne, too. :) They were cut from a similar block to be sure, and their directness to approaching situations to be sure. Perhaps one of these days I'll write a one-shot/drabble of what led them to this vulnerable moment, and I'm glad the sort of, need for rest comes across.

And honestly: thank you again for supporting me through my own journey in so many ways. *hugs*

The angle to this- the delicate, graceful, and yet STRONG curve to the neck- WOW. I thought one of my horse-fanatic friends drew this.. and then I saw your name and I was like I KNOW WHO THAT IS.

Thanks hon, that means a lot to me. :) This was one of those pieces where at the time I was doodling it (SOOOOO tiny!), I wished I had even a fraction of reference for a horse that's lying down, but honestly: there's a sort of flow to the gestures between them that I'm not sure I would have worked out if I was being guided by a reference. I'm generally pleased that Oberon looks as if he has a subtle expression there as well, without being overbearing to the quietness of the scene.

ANYWAY! So much babble! Thank you once again for your compliments. <3

Honesty, sometimes an image really could use a reference, but sometimes - like this one- it won't benefit from it. As you said, this was more about the artistic gesture, not the stickler accuracy. I say you made a fantastic choice!

Nice work, and a great gesture! I'm going to have to watch that firefly panel.

Thanks so much for the compliments! While I have my quibbles with it (especially since it was so tiny), I'm generally pleased with the sort of "flow" of the characters, and I've been trying to up the ante on posting more of my stuff, even if they are just sketches.

I'd also totally recommend both the Firefly and Joss Whedon panel. Let me know if you have any problems locating them, as I'd be happy to point you to them. :)

Thank you so very much! I'm glad you like the flow of the mane and tail, I was trying to have it look as if it was wrapping protectively around the girl as well.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate it!
