Mechanical Hummingbird Color by Dreamspirit Mechanical Hummingbird Color by Dreamspirit
Completed on February 16th, 2011

For the moment I'm going to consider this "done" knowing I will either be revisiting the actual piece or the concept in the future.

I ended up altering some gears to make sure the wings would move as they needed to, and I toyed around with just a touch of blur as well.

Detail view also available.

Photoshop CS3 and CS4

Prints available. Email me for details.

I look at this and I see a blend of two things I love; 10 Years and Steampunk. Thank you for sharing this.

I'm not sure what 10 Years is. Can you enlighten me?

I'm glad you like the art, though!

This is brilliant! I thought it was a golden living hummingbird until I looked closer. x3 Very unique, love the details and colors!

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave me feedback! :) I really enjoyed designing him and trying to imagine how he would work were he a real creature. :) The details were definitely the fun bit, and I'm looking forward to designing similar clockwork creatures in the future as well!

Hehe! Well the original is off flitting around, but I DO offer prints, if that's a consolation. ;)

If I could make a physical one of these that could take flight, that would be truly wondrous, though!

Thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment!

It would be rather excellent if they were real things.

Thanks so much! I've had a lot of fun painting these little clockwork critters and am eager to get rolling on the next one I've been planning. If only there were more hours in the day!

Thanks for taking the time to leave me feedback! I really appreciate it!

I don't know if I could do art for someone else. I am still new enough that what I draw has to be related to what I am doing.

Yeah, it's definitely a trick starting out to be able to de-attach yourself from a piece and get into a mindset that it's "work." I found that once I started being able to separate what pieces were for me versus what were for others that it wasn't as hard as I'd first thought because I didn't allow myself to get attached to the pieces for other people (well, most of the time ;)).

:) I could see that being a big problem. My hard part is I don't know if anyone would think I am good enough to want something. Then, when I draw, I draw best when I am doing it for something in my life: ie my stories, where as the couple I've done for contests have not been as good. I may need to take more time at them. We'll see

It's all a work in progress. :) It took me quite awhile to start to want doing commissioned work (instead of just work I made and then sold). And even after I wanted to try doing commissions, it took awhile for me to find a market of anyone interested in buying from me. All good things in time, I suppose. :)

True. I'm glad that you were able to find the market. Keep working. I look forward to seeing what you post both here and on facebook.

Yeah, this is definitely one of those pieces where I think zooming in or peering closer and seeing all the little details really helps "sell" it. :)

Thanks so much for the compliments!

Love the sense of purpose each piece of the bird-mechanism possesses. And the venetian tone to the mask is delicious. Great job.

Thanks so very much for the compliments! It took me a few iterations (some of which are in my gallery in greyscale) as I tried to figure out some of the mechanics and how everything would fit together. I'm definitely glad I did all those initial studies, though, because the first few made me cringe in certain ways, and I was able to learn from them and then finally work my way up to this piece. :)

I'm glad you like the tone as well! I really had a lot of fun with this one and am hoping to create other little critters in the near-future as well. So far it's just this hummingbird and the dragonfly, but I definitely have ideas for others.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave me feedback!

Incredible

Love the bright colours and the attention to detail. This'll probably be one of those drawings I keep coming back and looking at.

For which reason, I will favorite it. :]
