Current as of the evening of January 3rd, 2012

I realize that one of my weak-points is my ability to render landscapes, so what started as a "I'll do a 1 hour speed-painting..." has turned into a moderately longer little self-challenge I plan to casually continue over a few days.

Back in 2007 I actually illustrated a very similar scene, but it doesn't appear as though I ever uploaded it to DA (it was sub-par at best, even for the time), so this time around I'm trying to stay somewhat true to the original scene and make it a bit more grounded in reality.

Note: If you're not very good at landscapes, and don't do them often, it's probably not a fantastic idea to try to "learn" but doing one almost entirely from your head. Arugh. After the initial sketch, I tried to get my perspective at least a BIT better, since what was down originally was allllllll over.

I'm also blaming :icononeirosuchus: again for this, because I can, and because she is my inspiring muse like that. <3

Nearly all of this was hashed-out and painted while listening to the song "The Dream" by Secret Garden (sung by Moya Brennan).

Personal Story Art.

SO what's the story with the two spires of rock sticking up over on that other hilltop? Cause I know there is one. ;)

Buuuuh? >_> What do you mean? Did I mention one one place and two in another?

No, I'm just looking at the pic, and there's two standing stones there on one hilltop? I vaguely recall that you might have mentioned them, but I don't remember more than that.

Ohhhh! I read your comment wrong! I read it as you recalled there being one spire, and not two, and was like "Buh? Where did I mention that?" XD

The thought is that those are pairs of stone lions, and that having them visible all over helps to define the area (as well as to send signals, likely). Many would be little watchtowers rather than just ornamental.

They'd have smaller versions in most towns as well to sort of define/unite the kingdom.

That make sense? For a moment there I was thinking "As far as I know I've always said the lions appear in pairs."

Yes ma'am. :) Just can't tell at all that they are lions, was just seeing standing stones there. THAT IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO GOT CRAZY DETAILED. *shakes fist*

Yeah, the far-off ones are still not really identifiable. Hopefully the ones on the bridge and river are, though.

And.... I think you are saying I need to add more detail to the far-off ones to define them? Because that's what I am hearing? ;) *snicker*

Looking very nice. I like the colors that you have given it.

Thanks! It still isn't where I want it to be, but at least it looks nice to finally see it rendered in color. :)

I know that feeling. I just keep trying and then it finally makes it or I scrap the whole thing and try again.
