Angered Loirin Sketch by Dreamspirit Angered Loirin Sketch by Dreamspirit
Completed on June 23rd, 2011

He walked with intention and planted his paws forcefully into the warm earth. In response, the claws of each toe flexed and curled deeply into the soil, as if bracing against their owner's desire to push forward just one more step.

"How dare you..." he spoke, with barely contained rage that shook the air, "How DARE you try to hurt her..."

It's been awhile since I revisited this character, and for some reason I felt compelled to this week during two separate sketch groups. I'd estimate he took me around 3 hours total (including socializing time ;) ).

He's an olden character of mine from many years ago: a cross between a lion and a kirin (an oriental unicorn).

I've always rendered him as rather tranquil, so I took a stab at what he might look like if he was rather angered at someone or something.

I also think I had a bit too much fun with the mane. >_>

4 x 5.5 inches in graphite.

Below are some earlier concepts of him:

Wow you can serious draw.
Personally (don't take this offensively) but I'm not a fan of these type of drawings, but it is really detailed and amazing!

Thanks for the compliment, and no offense taken!

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by not being a fan of "these types" of drawings? Do you mean the subject matter just isn't your "thing?"

No problem :]
And yeah, its not my 'thing' but like, don't take that the wrong way. I love looking at any pictures, but this one doesn't do anything for me.
I'm probably babbling on here, sorry.

I totally get you, and no problem. :) The fact that you could look through the figure and appreciate the style/ability in the rendering even though the subject matter wasn't especially appealing for you and yet still took the time to leave me a compliment and feedback... that's seriously humbling, regardless. So thank you. :) I tend to prefer my own stuff when it's much more rigid and hyper-detailed and defined, and I"m trying to experiment with being a bit more flexible in pieces like this.

It always fun to draw an OC act out of character! I like how the mane looks sorta scruffy and frizzy :]

Agreed!

I suppose in another alternative universe maybe someone awakened him from lazing around in the noonday sun by rubbing a helium balloon on his mane to get it like that. XD

Thank you! :) I'm going to try to put up little written blurbs with some of my stuff as I can. I like how some of them can kind of help to set the "mood" (even if a lot of people won't read them). I actually hadn't realized until a few days ago how "popular" (relatively speaking for my work) [link] was and how many folks that commented had actually taken the time to read the story I'd written with it. It felt really good. :)

Thanks! It's a lot of fun sort of evolving him over the years and being able to look back at his (extremely) humble beginnings as well. :)

Thanks again for taking the time to leave me feedback! I really appreciate it!

Very nicely done. I can completely see how the middle earlier one is the same character as this one. You were able to create the same character just in a different mood. Very nicely done.

Indeed. :) I think the one on the far left was more of a "how do all the parts fit together?" piece, versus the marker headshot is where I really started to establish the character's individual, gentle personality. This is precisely that one in a different mood, which was a real challenge! I'm trying to force myself to try to put more emotion into my faces when I'm being a bit more pressed for time since I think it's a lot more interesting than that sort of neutral expression I was so guilty of in so many pieces. [link] was one of the testing grounds of that (which, oddly, is also lion-based). I'm still trying to work on being able to show expressions properly, that's for sure!

Thanks again for your compliments!

I think you did an excellent job of showing the lion's expression in [link] He is so saying, "Would you please shut up?!" :)

I understand trying to show proper expressions. Somehow, I seem to get it in the picture without trying. I'm not sure exactly how. I think it is the curve of the dragon's mouth that does it. My husband usually picks up on it and then tells me. Sometimes it is perfect and other times I have to go in and change it.

Thanks so much for your compliment! :) It's always a lot of fun (and a bit of a struggle) to try a new take on a somewhat familiar personal character, but in this case trying to figure out how to express "angry" was an experience in and of itself!
