To Hope For BetterChris let the lug-headed stud gallop off freely after clearing a good round of warm-up jumps. Sometimes, the dolt just needed to keep his legs moving and he was getting to be a reasonable mount to compete on. Still dumb as a plank of wood but Chris didn't think that was ever going to change out of Jax. He pretty much had this horse figured out: ride him hard in warm ups and no vacations after a show. If he sat even just a day, he turned into such a bitter, stiff lug. It made the first few rides after a long trip a real pain in the ass to get his head pulled out of his ass. Thankfully, having Kate around at the show, made this incredibly easy to manage. She already had Jax tacked and ready so when he was done running Dapur through his class, Chris could hand him over and hop on Jax before the next class started up. And she did it without having to ask and she did it efficiently, having a good sense around the horses and especially handling the stud around all of the show commotion and other horses buzzing about. And, of course, that wasn't the sole reason he liked having her around. They were pretty much on the same wavelength. They didn't need to be overly attached. They could have their disagreements and it not be a big deal going forward. It was refreshing to be able to actually have a conversation that didn't feel like he had to defend himself or put on a façade. But at the same time… Chris wasn't dumb enough to feel like it wasn't all temporary. People changed. Original intentions, be it good or bad, when met with emotion often showed their true colors. Time and time again, Chris fell for the same trap and got hit with the same hurt. The first hit was the hardest. He didn't even know if it hurt. Blistering flashes of white and black. Again and again, pounding. Just when he thought it was done, another crash and the world rolled once more. The sky blackened. Looming. Sharp screaming cut short. Suffocation. The weight of his world crushing down on him. Jax grunted and sank down on his haunches. He tried to gape his mouth and escape the pull of the bit but to no avail. He heeded the cue and sputtered to a halt. The stud was never ready to be done with charging around the arena, ready for another jump, but this usually meant they were done for a bit. Chris bailed off the side of Jax before he even planted his feet. He stuttered a step but recovered in a smooth motion, pulling the reins over Jax's ears to lead him. It was all muscle memory as pure panic surged through his veins. His mind fought itself, instincts wanting him to get far away from the animal next to him. The other part of him remaining absolutely calm, well-rehearsed with staying the course in the face of adversity. He sighed heavily, inwardly groaning at himself. The sweaty palms and quiver in his legs. The fact that he was walking beside the horse instead of riding him. It happened again. A sensation of fear so overwhelming, he couldn't control his actions in the flood of it. It always just happened in a snap. And just as fast as it set in, it left him there feeling stupid and aggravated."Christopher…" Chris scowled hard. The voice of betrayal echoed loudly in his ears. He expected to hear ridicule and criticism. Instead, he was met with excuses that drove a man into spiraling failure. How easy it was to be broken and then to break another. It was never his original intentions. But, oh, how the emotions took those intentions and broke every single one of them down. Kate hesitated by the fence around the arena. She was going to call out to him but he looked mad. Not his usual resting bitch face that he used as a filter for people he didn't want to talk to. For a moment, she felt guilty that maybe she had put him in that mood. Maybe from asking him to ride with her in a class he probably wasn't all that interested in. She might have come across as the girlfriend that was getting too clingy or needy. Just the type of personality Chris didn't particularly enjoy. The guy was allergic to the sorts. She just thought it would be fun for them. But she also had to remind herself that this world was going to be Chris's future. The days of playing around in the woods with his girlfriend might have already sailed away. Chris spotted her out of the corner of his eye. She was scrunching the bottom of her ponytail; she did that when she was uncertain of something. His entire demeanor reset: lowering his shoulders, peeling the scowl from his face, and relaxing his grip on the reins. How many times could history repeat until it had to change the story? "Why do you look like you just failed a math test?" Chris teased her, leaning an elbow on the top rail. She had smiled when he started to head her way, but didn't know what to say. He called her out right away! "Excuse you, just because we're in the same math class doesn't make your grade better than mine," she smiled and jeered back at him. Chris was "technically" a year below her but he was in all the advanced classes and some that weren't even offered on site. Typical smarty pants. "Ahhh, but my name comes before yours, so therefore-" Kate popped him on the shoulder for that one. Maybe things weren't weird between them after all. But she wasn't as brave to ask like he was. Maybe Jax was just being stubborn as usual. "Get your head out of the books, Burton. I hope you and your horse are ready." She stuck her tongue out at him for good measure. "What? For tomorrow? Of course," he grinned. Kate looked like she didn't quite hear correctly until she smiled and shoved him again. He did remember! And even brought it up again! "Stop being so nice to me! It's weird!" Chris chuckled at her response. She was happy and it was clear that she did just want to be together. Good intentions. Time and time again… but he just couldn't pull against the urge to hope for something better. He grabbed her hand that she was scrunching her hair in. He slipped the ponytail from her grasp and flattened it down neatly again. He flipped it back over her shoulders and as much as he wanted to lean in to kiss her, that was so far out of his comfort zone out in the middle of the public. But the kind look was there and the blush on her cheeks meant the message was received. "Someone has to be the nice one if you're going to be the bossy one," he teased, stepping away before she could get a swipe at him. "You, sir," she laughed and marched after him down the fence line, "have a lot of manners to learn!" Chris rolled his eyes, "Nag, nag, nag, what did I say?" "I haven't even reached my full potential just yet! You just wait until after your ride, mister! I won't even lie to say your hair looks good anymore! Helmet head!" "Oh, so now you're just blind," Chris laughed, joining up with her outside the warmup arena. No, he didn't need her there to be better. But he very much wanted her there with him: to feel better. To hope to feel better.,Word count: 1301...(from Chris's POV)
