“Well, well, well, if it isn’t lil’ Burton. Hey, champ, where’s your pony? I hear your dad’s old farts finally weren’t good enough for you anymore. Hey, would you tell him if he wants to sell that stud of his, the one he did all that HCL stuff on, you let him know I’m just the guy!”
Chris kept walking, pretending he didn’t hear the annoying voice in his ear. He pulled out his phone and flipped through his messages, texting some friends back.
“Oi. Ooooiii! Chris! C’mon! We’re friends!” The voice followed. Persistently.
“No, we’re not,” Chris said flatly.
“Awww, c’mon! I’ve known you since you were, like, tiny...er. We’re practically family! So, tell me about your new horses! I need to know ‘em so I can be ready for when you age up! I’ve heard you’ve been doing well for yourself!”
Chris sighed and halted. He switched his screen off and pocketed his phone. The sooner he got this over with, the sooner he’d go away. “Ty…”
“Yea, Chris?”
“I don’t even know you. We’re not family. I’ve seen you ride. And you can ask anybody else in this arena and they’d say the same thing: you’ve only gotten as far as you have by a miracle. So don’t bother keeping an eye on my horses. Please, avert your eyes before you curse them. Pay attention to your own...horse…” If he could call it that. She was...less than the ideal horse.
Ty, the limber young man of 19, put his hand on his hip and leaned on one leg. He blew a curly lock of auburn hair out of his eyes and huffed at Chris. “Man, you used to be so much nicer. Now you sound like your dad. You’re gonna be a crusty old man by the time your my age, kid. Chill.”
Chris’s blank expression didn’t change. And that was a sure sign that he was not amused in the slightest for being compared to his father and then called a ‘crusty old man’. He hated Ty. He was a horrible excuse of a rider. Only interested in reckless riding that was flashy. Not at all planned out. Unfortunately, by some unforeseen will of the universe, he had landed himself with a mare, Risky Business, that made up for his reckless riding with her sheer luck and tenacity. She was ugly and had horrible conformation even by ‘basic’ horse standards. They had been together for years and everyone on the circuit, Dave included, was waiting for the day he finally didn’t get lucky and the mare dropped dead so he’d go back into the shadows where no one would have to see Tyler Raymore gallivant through a course like a maniac.
Ty smiled and clapped Chris on the shoulder, “No worries, lil’ bro, Risky and I have some new tricks up our sleeves! You tell your dad, he better be worried next time we compete together!”
Chris gave him the fakest smile that could crack his stone expression, “What? You learned how to stay in the saddle?”
Ty snorted and clapped Chris’s shoulder again, “Just you watch!”
Chris would rather pull his own eyes out and dip them in bleach than spend a second watching Ty trash a perfectly well-made course and make a joke out of show jumping. But even so… this could be a great moment to catch a great opportunity for an awful video and spread it like wildfire. His dark sense of humor made him stay, leaning on the rail to wait and see just what kind of tricks Ty had in store.
Meanwhile…
Alaric had finally managed to ditch the entourage that had accompanied him to Surrey. He’d left Liam behind with strict instructions and now found himself near one of the other arenas. Settling near the rail next to a well dressed kid who was glaring in the direction of the arena. Curious, he turned his head and blanched. A rider was making his way around the course in abysmal fashion. Almost as bad as the riding was the ugly horse that somehow managed to clear the fences. “This is why I didn’t want to come,” he grumbled to himself, “they’ll let just about anyone in these days.”
Chris glanced to his side, hearing agreeable terms. A brief moment of recognition; he swore he may know the guy through media but that might have been Dressage and he didn't stay up to date on any of that if he didn't have to. Uck.
He forced a grin to his lips, not convinced of it, more of a formality, "Opening qualifications to be wholesome and inclusive to profit on larger crowds. Ch." He gave a half shrug. "When they should be advocating higher quality that comes with deeper pockets. I guess if it has four legs and a couple ears, it meets their standard of a horse too…" a quick look into the arena as Ty charged into a fence with no setup. Did he even know what counting a stride was? The grey mare heaved herself over the jump, a loud clack of her hoof catching the pole but it remained up. This time. A shame.
Chris grimaced at the sight, "If you can call it that…"
Mouth curving into a smug smirk, Alaric turned toward the kid he had initially disregarded. “I couldn’t agree more,” he drawled. “Hard to believe the riff-raff is allowed to compete. Especially when people of proper taste and class are in attendance.” He paused, extending his hand forward. “I’m Alaric Montgomery. And you?”
Chris looked at his hand and then back up to him, a small grin following. He took his hand, "Chris Burton. I suppose even world shows have their circus performances to entertain the masses." His grin turned devilish. Wholly unprepared for-
"CHRIIIIS! You're making friends!? Your daddy's gonna be so proud of yooooou!" Ty called from the arena! He had just cleared a jump and was coming around haphazardly to another, having glanced over. He had heard all about Dave's plight to rekindle his relationship with his son and seeing him shake hands with someone was promising! At least he was making friends! "Introduce meeeee!" He came over the jump, flashing a smile and a peace sign, the mare grunting and tucking her hind legs under her belly and splaying her front legs, ramming her head into the air like some kind of inflated bounding llama.
Chris had jumped from hearing his name the first time and just looked completely horrified.
Disgusted.
Petrified.
Gross.
Just gross. UGH!
Alaric didn't get a chance to reply before the rider crashing through the course interrupted. "Wait, do you know him?" For a moment he seemed suspicious but seeing the look of utter disgust on the kid's face assured him that the two were anything close to friends. "Ah," he simpered, "you know one of those types as well? Pity. I'm sure we can find better things to do. If I have to spend one more moment watching that talent-less sack race around the jumps on that cow I think I'll vomit."
“Not by choice,” Chris reiterated to make sure that was completely evident. He felt the cold chills crawl across his skin, wrinkling his nose at the pair in the ring. He skirted around Alaric, making swift action to put as much space as possible between Ty, his gross horse, his gross riding, and his gross assumptions that they were friends. Seemed Alaric wasn’t the only one scurrying for the toilets. Or eye bleach. Or both.

COLLAB WITH oxymelon! We knew our rich snob boys would get along just fine when I made mention of my "new guy" here xD So I pestered Oxy into making up the hilarious sketch of Chris and Alaric because this is gold xDDD It's a masterpiece lolololol
SO UH?
New character??
Well, actually...not technically xD New to dA, yes! But Ty, here, is actually just as old as Dave's character concept! They were brought into an RP together, competing against each other! Only, Dave had a fancy mustache so he got to crash into dA first and spin off some of my most favorite story arcs <3
But now it's Ty's time to come and shine a little light! He just...he makes me smile and that's all that matters xD He makes the Burtons turn a shade green and it makes me giggle. What better place than a lovely rng show xD I lowkey hope he splatters into the ground lolololol
