Diesels SUCK by DragonWolfACe Diesels SUCK by DragonWolfACe
If Union Pacific 844 could talk, thats what she would say!

844 rests for a few days before she continues her way down to Texas. Got to love them elephant ears.

yeah steamers are the bomb. litterally. run out of water? THEY EXPLODE! diesels don't have this problem as the motors USE explosions, removing the explosion potential, since much of it has already exploded.   :snailnoid: >Atomic Cock

Indeed they DO.  Diesels get weaker and weaker the faster they go!  Steamers on the other hand?  They DO NOT CARE how fast they are going, they can pull just as hard going FAST as they can going SLOW!  The result?  Job gets DONE quicker compared to using the same amount of diesel horsepower.

Nothing can compare to how a steam engine runs diesels may be "cleaner" but steam engines looked beautiful running down the track. UP needs to restore more of their steam collection for excursions.

Diesels sucks?

To me, and anyone's opinions, diesels might do SUCK if they can do anything to replace any old steam locomotives.

By that, for example, ever looked up news on the Mount Washington Cog Railway, about that they actually runs new diesels which to take over the steamer's place of running the tourist service, due to environmental laws?

[link]

Besides, I liked classic diesels, like the GP7, the F-Unit, even the F40PH.
I always loved steam locomotives, but I hated to see steam locomotives scrapped to pieces, or see a steam locomotive BUTCHERED and converted into a STUPID diesel-electric crap, killing off the steam parts.

And while you're at it, ever mind to see the comparison between live steam, gas-powered, diesel-electric steam outline, and pedal outline trains?

Why not take a gander at this piece of boredom.

From a railfan's perspective, nothing can beat a steam engine, and there is no other symbol for railroads as powerful as the steam loco.

But from a factual perspective, other methods of traction have more power, higher top speeds, higher efficiency, need zero day-to-day maintenance, have comfy cabs and are easy to operate.

Same can be said about the 1st generation of deisels. But in all respect to older power, todays power SHOULD be better since, its about, oh, I dont know, 60 years of improving the technology.

Actually, steam has an easier time with top speeds than diesel, but electric is king when its the need for speed. All the reasons you mentioned are why the railroads here were so quick to drop steam for diesel. Some of the largests steam locomotics could only match a single diesel now when it took 4 diesels back when the transition started. Not to mention that you dont need a 5 man crew for every diesel to power the train like steam had. Then maintenance, a steam engine back in the day needed completely rebuilt every 2 years.

You're right about the top speed part, though one can overcome that by using an electric transmission, so that the prime mover's revs can be kept at optimum. It can be pretty fast as well. ;) [link]

Something tells me that the people who have said that diesels are better have never experienced the power of a steam locomotive such as 844 in person. I believe the saying goes as this: "Don't knock it until you try it!"

As for my opinion, long live Union Pacific and may they keep the beasts known as 844 and 3985 running for years to come.

Cost speaking, diesels are 150 times better than steam. Thats why almost every railroad went nearly bankrupt buying them in the 1940-50s.

But spiritually speaking, diesels are just a box on wheels. Hell, the majority of people, when thinking of a train, think of a 4-4-0 American or Thomas the Tank engine! Not a Dash9 or SD70Mac.

Word has it the 3985 will be running in a month!!
Dont forget about 4449, 800, 1225, 765, and 3751 to name a few!

Diesels are much much better than outdated kettles, you have the roaring engines which make everything around you shake, clag, also just the site of them stirs something deep and primevil. Awesome picture but diesels are better. Actually the smoke defletors make it look like bats wings.

Everything you just mentioned is exactly what steam is. The big different is a diesel is a box on wheels while a steam engine can pass for a living breathing beast. Electrics are even worse than diesels.

But then again, next to no one goes psycho and drives like idiots chasing over a diesel...most of the time.

A steam engine is just a boiler on wheels, yes a diesel is a box on wheels bit it sounds like you have some beast of immense size and power trapped inside that box, you cant beat the roar of a 1000hp engine. This will proove why diesels are awsome [link] there is a special reason why he didnt use a puffer. By the way the diesel he used is british. In Britain a lot of people go psycho and chase diesels, I agree with you about the electric locos (yawn).

Oh, dont get me wrong, I like diesels too. I just like both! The roar of a 1000hp engine? You talking about a switcher!? 4300HP is the standard here in the US.

Heres two fine examples of diesels with a beast inside.
[link] [link]

The difference is that while a diesel is internal, a steam engine is external. Everything about it is external. Sure, they may not be as loud as a diesel but they are dramatic creatures.

These engines arnt epic?? [link]

Sooo...at best, leave it as a tie!

ok dokey I will accept that, Unfortunately I couldnt watch the videos because my computer doesnt like youtube. By the way I like both steam and diesel, I'm a volunteer for a preservation railway. Our shunters have 250hp. But our High speed trains(my avatar is a picture of them) 4500hp at there disposal
