“They seemed to be enormous, iridescent cones, about ten feet high and ten feet wide at the base, and made up of some ridgy, scaly, semi-elastic matter. From their apexes projected four flexible, cylindrical members, each a foot thick, and of a ridgy substance like that of the cones themselves. These members were sometimes contracted almost to nothing, and sometimes extended to any distance up to about ten feet. Terminating two of them were enormous claws or nippers. At the end of a third were four red, trumpet-like appendages. The fourth terminated in an irregular yellowish globe some two feet in diameter and having three great dark eyes ranged along its central circumference. Surmounting this head were four slender grey stalks bearing flower-like appendages, whilst from its nether side dangled eight greenish antennae or tentacles. The great base of the central cone was fringed with a rubbery, grey substance which moved the whole entity through expansion and contraction.”
H.P. Lovecraft, The Shadow out of Time
This is perhaps my favorite species of the lovecraftian universe as well with its history, a powerful race able to visualize and travel at any point of time from the past to the future, in addition to the short but extremely interesting visualization of the future of this earth and what will probably follow after man, in addition to the extraterrestrial aspect, but the only part which is extraterrestrial in them is only the minds of the great race, since their bodies are just a kind of organism part of a completely extinct clade of some completely separate branch of the earth life. (I am not sure if probable product of The elder things or probably evolved naturally)
Before the Cambrian, was the Edicarean epoch, dominated by lifeforms that looked nothing like the phyla that sprang up in the Cambrian. Even fish originated in the Cambrian. I think some edicarean species still exist ...
While the Great Race are of earth origin (tho their minds came from Yith), the Old Race are from another world or even another cosmos ! They colonized many worlds, but only on earth did things go awry. Earth is cursed, the property of the Great Old Ones.
The Great Race are friendly,or at least neutral, and many walk among us today in human bodies. The Old Race is hostile, even homicidally murderous to humans.
i need to find this book.
My house plant escaped again!!!
I always thought that the Yith looked a bit cute, to be honest.
Oh shizz my favorite lovecraftian weirdos drawn by one of my favorite artists. absolutely fantastic results!
They look to me like highly derived, sapient barnacles.
Wonder what a realistic Cthulhu would look like....*shudders*
I must say that it would be variable bearing in mind that they have been described as shape-shifting beings, although their most characteristic form is the octopus head, dragon winged humanoid.
What's next, the Mi Go?
Probably, as well with other species
