Oriental Rainbow Progress by DragonsAndBeasties Oriental Rainbow Progress by DragonsAndBeasties
Every once in a while I will take pictures while I'm making something. I think it's neat to see how artists make their stuff, and people ask a lot about how I make the orientals. So here you go!

The inside is a foil armature, with a strong wire running through the length of the tail. Tails are very fragile so they need good support. The claws were pre-baked and then pressed into holes I made in the toes. Every single hair was carefully textured with a needle, then placed individually on the body. The belly gradient was made using the skinner blend method, which can be easily googled or youtubed. I can't really explain it very well, easier to watch how it's done ^^;

Commissions are closed indefinitely, but my pricing guide can be found here: dragonsandbeasties.deviantart.…

Please visit my FAQ page dragonsandbeasties.deviantart.… before asking questions about techniques and materials. Just about every question I get is covered there. I’m not trying to be rude, I just get tired of answering the same questions over and over ^^;

How do you give it that glossy finish?
martini-s Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It's glaze, a thick clear liquid substance used to make clay shiny

It's really cool to see how you make things! You should do more step by step photos Nod
schlusky Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2015
hey i just want to say that your work is incredible. if you ever do open up for commissions again I hope you reconsider your pricing. your asking price on the more detailed stuff is way too cheap for the amount of time and effort that must go into these beauties.
dark6977 Featured By Owner Jul 1, 2015
wow hose are lovo see one little more of an angry look tho like a dragon should. like more aggression and intensity but the detail is amazing, keep doing it!!!!
WickedandEnchanted Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
Did you make the eyes with beads or is it clay?
And do you recommend baking the "bead landing" brand in the ovens or not?
martini-s Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'm pretty sure the eyes are clay

Omg, I can't even.
You know, I visit your page all the time because your work is so inspiring. For years I've been eyeing the packets of Sculpey for sale in stores but I've never gotten any because I'm terrified I won't be cut out for sculpting. It's a dream, though =[
Nevertheless, this guy is just too too perfect <3
Shiinasen Featured By Owner Sep 6, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
Hey, you. You want to make clay thing? Then buy a pack of sculpey and start playing with it. Make what ever you want. If you keep working at it, you will get better. The first sculpture of a dragon I made was... pretty bad. But from screwing up, I learned what to and what not to do. My point is, I would have not dreamed that I would be so good at making things in general out of clay. Years ago, I only dreamt of being able to draw real people. I didn't think I was cut out for realistic things, or even clay, because there were so many other people who were so good at it. And now I am. Dude, go make things. You will regret not doing something you wanted to do later in life.
