Fixed Fusion Monsters: Ocean Defender

Description

Here’s the fourth picture of the Fixing Fusion Monsters series of my very own making. This time, it’s the fully fixed Fusion of Zombyra the Dark and Maryokutai. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, anime, and card game, there is a Fusion monster called Last Warrior from Another Planet, which is supposed to be a Fusion of Zombyra the Dark and Maryokutai. However, that monster lacked all the much-needed requirements of a proper Fusion, since instead of being a masked superhero like Zombyra the Dark or a magical living sphere like Maryokutai, it was simply a massive yellow-skinned alien with mechanical parts all over its body.

Unlike Fusionist, Barox, and Marine Beast — who at least shared the themes and physical attributes of their respective fusees despite their many (and I do mean many) flaws — Last Warrior from Another Planet completely lacked both the themes and the physical traits of the two monsters used to create it. Because of that, there was no way I could fix Last Warrior from Another Planet, so I had to be brutal and toss it straight into the bin before going back to the drawing board to find a way to create a more worthy Fusion of those two monsters.

At first, this was extremely difficult, as I had no idea what could properly combine a skeletal masked hero with a living magical red sphere that possesses water powers. In the end, however, I settled on crustaceans as the base and main theme for this brand-new Fusion design. Crustaceans are sea animals that possess an exoskeleton, meaning they don’t have internal bones — their physical bodies are their skeletons. Some examples of crustaceans include shrimp, crabs, and lobsters.

Given both the exoskeleton and aquatic themes, I realized that a crustacean was the ideal solution I had been looking for to create a far better Fusion between a skeletal masked hero and a living magical red sphere with water powers. So instead of being a “2.0” like the first three fixes I previously worked on, this Fusion is a complete redesign of that flawed monster. The result is a masked superhero with water powers who wears thick red armor resembling the exoskeleton of a crustacean, featuring several noticeable elements inspired by both crabs and lobsters, while still remaining faithful to the two monsters used for this Fusion. Thus, Ocean Defender was born.

This crab-themed superhero retains the body shape, armor, cape, boots, gauntlets, and mask of Zombyra the Dark, while the dark red coloration of the armor is a direct reference to Maryokutai, which is also dark red. The purple and blue colors originally seen on Zombyra’s suit and cape have been swapped — the cape is now blue to better represent water, while the suit itself is purple. Lastly, the pointy shoulder pads seen on the skull-themed superhero were reimagined as claw-like gauntlets, which this crustacean warrior uses to slash and tear through enemies.

Born from the Fusion of Zombyra the Dark and Maryokutai, Ocean Defender is a masked warrior who rules both the depths of the sea and the battlefield. From Zombyra the Dark, he inherits the form and resolve of a skeletal superhero devoted to justice, while Maryokutai grants him absolute mastery over water and life beneath the waves. Using this power, Ocean Defender can generate and launch pressurized streams of water directly from his hands, strong enough to sweep away enemies in an instant. Encased in thick, crustacean-like armor resembling the exoskeleton of sea creatures, Ocean Defender’s body is as tough as steel, allowing him to withstand most physical attacks with ease. His clawed gauntlets, horns, and jagged spikes turn him into a living weapon, capable of tearing through foes both above and below the surface. A swift and skilled swimmer, he moves effortlessly through the ocean and can breathe underwater, where his power far surpasses that on land. Acting as a relentless guardian of the seas, Ocean Defender delivers justice to all evildoers who threaten the waters he protects, washing them away with unstoppable tides and crushing force. The stats of this masked crab hero are the same as the Last Warrior from Another Planet except that I had to change the elemental attribute to fit this new theme better.
