Fixed Fusion Monsters: Mystical Sand 2.0

Here’s the sixth picture in the Fixing Fusion Monsters series of my very own making. This is the updated and much-improved Fusion of Giant Soldier of Stone and Ancient Elf, named Mystical Sand 2.0. I gave this monster the name Mystical Sand 2.0 because, in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, anime, and card game, there is a Fusion monster named Mystical Sand who, just like many of the others I’ve fixed in this series so far, doesn’t feel like an actual Fusion monster. This is mainly because it lacks many of the key design elements from both Giant Soldier of Stone and Ancient Elf.

The original Mystical Sand was a green-haired witch wearing a red dress and a matching hat while carrying a broom. Although it was an Earth Attribute monster and a Rock-Type, just like Giant Soldier of Stone, and a magic user similar to Ancient Elf, it sadly missed most of the physical attributes of both Fusees. It ultimately felt like a humanoid woman in a red dress rather than an actual elf like Ancient Elf, and it also lacked some—if not all—of the rock elements from Giant Soldier of Stone throughout its body. This is why this Fusion had to go through major updates.

While I do agree with the idea of a magical creature gifted with earth attributes, both in appearance and powers—and I genuinely liked that approach despite the many flaws I mentioned—it simply needed a few major tweaks. As a result, the earth theme and hard stone elements seen in Giant Soldier of Stone, as well as the mythical creature aspect and magical warrior traits of Ancient Elf, were all kept but reinterpreted in entirely new ways. This was done to avoid making the updated Fusion feel like a simple recolor of the two Fusees, while still remaining completely faithful to the monsters used to create it.

The new Mystical Sand, also known as Mystical Sand 2.0, was originally a complicated design to work with. I had no clear idea of how to properly combine a living stone statue with a female magical elf. However, after brainstorming through numerous attempts, I finally found what I believe to be the perfect way to merge both monsters. Once again, I chose simplicity by using the overall physical appearance of Ancient Elf, while adding the thicker parts of Giant Soldier of Stone, reinterpreted as pieces of armor worn by this updated Fusion.

Just like the first three Fusion Monsters in this series, this is a 2.0 version, as it is essentially the same monster but now incorporates several recognizable parts from both Fusees. So far, I’ve used the dress, hair, eyes, skin, and color palette from Ancient Elf, while also adding elf ears to give Mystical Sand a more elven look. The scabbard, collar, shoulder pads, gauntlets, right glove, and mask are all made of stone to reference Giant Soldier of Stone, as well as to give Mystical Sand more defensive and offensive capabilities. The gigantic sword is a combination of the stone sword from Giant Soldier of Stone and the staff from Ancient Elf. Despite being portrayed as a fragile and feminine monster like the latter, this updated Fusion would actually be a very large creature, comparable in size to the Giant Soldier of Stone.

Mystical Sand 2.0 is a mysterious and fiercely territorial Fusion monster, renowned for her intelligence as much as her overwhelming physical strength. Born from the union of Giant Soldier of Stone and Ancient Elf, she embodies both raw earthbound power and ancient magical wisdom. She possesses complete mastery over sand, allowing her to manipulate it at will, reshape the battlefield, and even transform her own body into living sand to ensnare her enemies or unleash devastating surprise attacks. Unlike most monsters who rely heavily on elemental abilities, Mystical Sand does not depend solely on her sand manipulation. Her physical body and attire are forged from extraordinarily dense stone and enchanted minerals inherited from Giant Soldier of Stone, rendering her nearly invulnerable to most conventional physical attacks. This natural armor allows her to withstand direct combat with ease, making brute force against her a futile effort. In close combat, her right hand delivers earth-shattering punches capable of knocking out even the toughest opponents, launching them vast distances with a single blow. The sheer power she wields is so immense that, with a mere touch, she can fracture solid rock and crush entire mountains. Complementing her raw strength is her colossal sword, a weapon formed from hardened stone, precious gems, and reinforced metal. This blade is a perfect fusion of Giant Soldier of Stone’s massive sword and Ancient Elf’s magical staff, allowing Mystical Sand to cleave through most solid materials while delivering heavy yet surprisingly swift strikes infused with magical force. Despite her imposing size and overwhelming strength—traits inherited from Giant Soldier of Stone—Mystical Sand retains the grace, intelligence, and mystical discipline of Ancient Elf. She is a tactical warrior who carefully analyzes her enemies, combining brute strength, magical prowess, and environmental control to dominate the battlefield. Though her appearance may suggest a fragile and elegant spellcaster, she is anything but; Mystical Sand 2.0 stands as a towering, unyielding guardian of the earth, equally capable of annihilating foes through strategy or sheer destructive power. Despite her imposing size and overwhelming strength—traits inherited from Giant Soldier of Stone—Mystical Sand retains the grace, intelligence, and mystical discipline of Ancient Elf. She is a tactical warrior who carefully analyzes her enemies, combining brute strength, magical prowess, and environmental control to dominate the battlefield. The overall stats of this new Mystical Sand are actually the same ones seen from the original.
