Description
Here’s the thirteenth picture of the second wave of the Fixing Fusion Monsters series. Not only is this one the twenty-third overall entry of the entire series, but it is also the second-to-last of this current wave before I begin working on the upcoming third one in the near future. This piece depicts the updated and improved Fusion of Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest, named Sanwitch 2.0. I chose this name because, in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, anime, and card game, there is an actual Fusion monster called Sanwitch.
Just like the previous Fusion monsters in this series that were either tweaked into 2.0 versions due to lacking the physical attributes and colors of their respective fusees, or completely redesigned because they dropped most—if not all—of the original themes of the monsters used to create them, this Fusion also required a major overhaul in its design.
The original Sanwitch was a small, cute-looking witch with green skin and yellow eyes that clearly originated from Sangan. She wore a brown dress, a white cloak, two yellow shoes, and a large white hat with a brown stripe in the middle, yellow details, and a red eye located at the center. She also wielded a wooden staff and had a small Sangan next to her. While not terrible—since this Fusion monster did feature Sangan’s green skin and three eyes, along with a witch-like dress, hat, and staff—it lacked several physical attributes of Witch of the Black Forest. Additionally, the overly cute appearance felt more appropriate for Kuriboh rather than Sangan.
Despite these flaws, the Fusion had a lot of untapped potential. After doing extensive research, I eventually found the perfect way to merge the furred, three-eyed Sangan with the sinister Witch of the Black Forest into something far creepier. Much like my previous 2.0 redesigns of Labyrinth Tank, Cyber-Saurus, Rare Fish, Flame Ghost, Roaring Ocean Snake, and Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon, which restored missing elements and colors from their original fusees, this new Sanwitch is the same monster—but now incorporates every major physical trait and visual element from both of its components.
The central concept behind this updated design—used to connect two very different monsters—was inspired by the Skinwalker, a creature from Native American folklore, primarily associated with Navajo culture, where the legend originated. A Skinwalker, or Yee Naaldlooshii in the Navajo language, is an evil warlock or witch capable of transforming into, possessing, or disguising themselves as animals. Yee Naaldlooshii roughly translates to “so it goes, on all fours,” emphasizing their nature as shapeshifters. To become a Skinwalker, a shaman must kill a close family member through a sacrificial ritual, after which supernatural powers are granted. While Skinwalkers can transform into many animals, they are most commonly associated with wolves, cougars, bears, foxes, and coyotes. When they return to their human forms, they often wear the skins of the animals they transform into. This concept of an evil witch wearing the skin of another being directly inspired the new Sanwitch 2.0.
This updated Fusion monster incorporates Sangan’s three yellow eyes, green skin, large claws, razor-sharp teeth, and light brown fur. That fur was transformed into clothing, forming a cape, hat, shoes, and a large collar that covers the chest and body. From Witch of the Black Forest, Sanwitch 2.0 gains her head, arms, legs, purple hair, dark dress, and gray-and-blue collar, which was redesigned into a belt. The brown, wing-shaped ears originally located on the Witch’s head were moved onto the furred hat, while the yellow eye on her forehead was reimagined as the glowing yellow crystal ball at the top of her scepter.
Sanwitch 2.0 wields a wooden scepter, inspired by the original version but redesigned into a larger and more imposing staff crowned with a yellow crystal ball. This crystal allows her to see into the distant past and far future, granting her vast knowledge of ancient events as well as foresight into what is yet to come—making her exceptionally prepared to counter any enemy she encounters. Her large, pointy nose was inspired by classic depictions of witches in films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and The Wizard of Oz, while her green skin and pointed ears draw inspiration from Jenny Greenteeth, a fearsome witch from English folklore.
Sanwitch 2.0 is a terrifying yet deeply intelligent sorceress who dwells in the heart of an ancient, cursed forest where twisted trees whisper secrets and the ground itself seems alive. Born from the dark union of Sangan, the three-eyed fiend of raw greed and hunger, and the Witch of the Black Forest, a master of forbidden sorcery, Sanwitch embodies both monstrous instinct and calculated arcane wisdom. Clad in the fur of a savage beast she slew long ago, Sanwitch wears this hide not merely as clothing, but as a symbol of dominance and transformation. The fur carries remnants of Sangan’s feral nature, granting her immense physical power, razor-sharp claws, and an ever-present hunger that lurks beneath her composed exterior. At will, she can abandon her humanoid form and become a hulking, furred abomination driven by predatory instinct, capable of tearing apart intruders who dare trespass upon her domain. Despite her grotesque appearance, Sanwitch is no mindless monster. From the Witch of the Black Forest, she inherited profound magical knowledge and mastery over curses, hexes, and forbidden rituals. She spends her days brewing vile concoctions, weaving spells that cripple the body, shatter the mind, or slowly drain the life force of her enemies. Entire villages have vanished after angering her, leaving behind nothing but silence, broken charms, and claw marks carved into the trees. Sanwitch carries a gnarled wooden scepter crowned with a glowing yellow crystal, an artifact infused with ancient magic. This relic allows her to peer into the distant past and the far future, revealing forgotten truths and ominous destinies alike. Through it, she can also see directly into the souls of others, exposing hidden fears, desires, and sins—knowledge she often exploits for her own gain. Though feared across the land, Sanwitch is not purely malicious. Lost travelers may find her offering guidance, shelter, or cryptic warnings—but never without a price. Whether it be knowledge, service, or something far more personal, every favor she grants binds the recipient closer to her dark influence. Those who attempt to deceive her or overstay their welcome are rarely seen again. A living fusion of beast and witch, instinct and intellect, Sanwitch 2.0 stands as a nightmarish guardian of the forest—an ancient presence who rewards cunning, punishes greed, and reminds all who wander too far that some paths should never be taken. The new Sanwtich shares all the stats as the original.
