Description

Here’s the tenth picture of the second wave of the Fixing Fusion Monsters series, which also happens to be the twentieth one of the whole series. This is the updated and improved Fusion of Skull Servant and Dissolverock, known as Flame Ghost 2.0. I named this Fusion monster Flame Ghost 2.0 because in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, anime, and card game, there’s an actual Fusion monster called Flame Ghost.

However, just like all the previous Fusion monsters of this entire series, some were turned into 2.0 versions of themselves because they were almost perfect but lacked a couple of elements and colorations from their two or three fusees, while others were completely redesigned because they lacked most—if not all—of the necessary physical attributes and overall themes that originated from the monsters used to create these new, stronger forms.

This new Fusion monster is no exception. While the original version of this monster had indeed nailed the skeletal element seen in Skull Servant and the burning element present in Dissolverock, it lacked just a couple of minor details from the two fusees, as well as their proper colors. Again, this isn’t a complete revamp, as the original version of this updated Fusion monster was almost perfect, similarly to how I made 2.0 versions of Labyrinth Tank, Cyber-Saurus, and Rare Fish.

The original Flame Ghost was a walking skeleton made entirely out of pure lava. Although it had the physical attributes seen in both monsters, it completely lacked the clothing of Skull Servant. While the entire physical body was indeed made of actual lava just like Dissolverock, it was colored red instead of orange. Thus, in spite of these small flaws, this Fusion monster was still completely faithful to the two fusees, but only needed a few major tweaks to become fully perfect.

At first, I was going to make this frightful-looking creature a Fire Attribute monster instead of a Darkness Attribute one like the original version. In the end, however, I decided to keep the Darkness Attribute, as the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. Throughout countless legends from around the world, there have been numerous fire creatures that originate from places of pure darkness, such as the Ifrit from Islamic mythology—a malevolent being made entirely of fire—and several devils said to be the most powerful subordinates of Lucifer after he became the king of the underworld following his banishment from Heaven, according to the ancient Bible.

Another thing that helped me with the updated design of Flame Ghost, as well as finding a bond between Skull Servant and Dissolverock, was the concept of volcanoes and wastelands, as both are connected to earth and destruction. When I was a child, I believed volcanoes and lava were connected only to fire, but over the years I learned that they are also tied to earth, since lava is essentially a combination of both elements. This is why many fictional lava-, magma-, and volcano-based warriors and monsters are classified as both Fire and Earth rather than one or the other, such as Akainu from One Piece, Magmion from Gormiti, and AncientVolcanomon from Digimon.

In real life and across various media, wastelands are often places that were once full of life and natural beauty until they were reduced to piles of ashes, devoid of any life, by erupting volcanoes or massive meteors. As a result, many wastelands are filled with skeletons of humans and animals alike, as bones are often the only remnants left behind after extinction-level events. These ideas helped me find the perfect connection between Skull Servant and Dissolverock, as they are respectively a creepy walking skeleton and a fiery, living mass of lava.

While I successfully included the entire skeletal body of Skull Servant and the orange lava seen throughout Dissolverock, I initially struggled to find a way to incorporate the purple cloak of the former into Flame Ghost 2.0. I went through numerous options before settling on a modified version of the cloak in the form of a cape and pants. Eventually, I was reminded of the gladiators of Ancient Rome, who were forced to fight each other to the death for the twisted amusement of emperors and crowds.

This concept, combined with the fact that the Colosseum was once littered with the skeletons of dead gladiators and spectators due to animal attacks and disasters, as well as the numerous volcanic eruptions that plagued the Roman Empire, helped inspire the transformation of the purple cloak into a fearsome gladiator-style armor. Since one of the two monsters used to form the original Flame Ghost is a cloak-wearing foot soldier, it felt appropriate that this stronger form would be a higher-ranking warrior, making a gladiator the perfect thematic match.

The physical components of this lava-formed gladiator consist of the skeletal body of Skull Servant, the purple from the cloak integrated into the armor, and the orange lava that forms Dissolverock. Additionally, since both monsters feature black eyes and mouths, it felt natural for their Fusion to share these traits as well. The green feathers on the helmet are inspired by the green bones Skull Servant has been depicted with in some artworks over the years, even though other depictions show white bones.

Finally, the spear made of orange lava represents the fact that this skeletal gladiator is essentially a walking forge, capable of creating weapons from his own body—such as shields, swords, axes, spears, bows and arrows, whips, and daggers—all forged from the same molten lava that makes up his bloodthirsty and vengeful form.

Flame Ghost 2.0 is an undead Fusion monster born from the union of Skull Servant, the fallen skeletal foot soldier, and Dissolverock, the living mass of molten lava. It is the vengeful spirit of a once-proud gladiator who met his end after being cast into the depths of a raging volcano. Refusing to accept death, his hatred for those who betrayed him and his thirst for vengeance ignited his soul, allowing him to rise again—but at a terrible cost. His flesh was burned away, his sanity shattered, and his humanity completely erased. Reborn as a skeletal warrior composed of blazing lava, Flame Ghost exists solely to slaughter gladiators, tyrants, innocent bystanders, and anyone foolish enough to stand in his way. The skeletal frame inherited from Skull Servant serves as a vessel for his cursed existence, while the molten body granted by Dissolverock fuels his endless rage. His body radiates such extreme heat that anything he touches is reduced to ash, and even the ground beneath his feet cracks and melts as he marches forward. Though a single Flame Ghost is capable of causing immense destruction on its own, its true horror is revealed when many of them gather together. Under the command of a cruel and power-hungry emperor, legions of Flame Ghosts march as an unstoppable army, incinerating entire cities and leaving behind nothing but wastelands of bones, scorched earth, and molten ruin. Their presence turns once-living lands into lifeless hellscapes, a grim testament to the union of death and fire. Bound by hatred and sustained by volcanic flames, Flame Ghost 2.0 is a living reminder that vengeance does not fade with death—it only burns hotter. The stats of the new Flame Ghost are the same ones from the original.
