Fixed Fusion Monsters: Divine Sea Turtle

Here’s the ninth picture of the second wave of the Fixing Fusion Monsters series, as this one also happens to be the nineteenth entry of the entire series. This time, it’s the brand new and much more improved Fusion of Mystic Lamp and Hyosube. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, anime, and card game, there is a Fusion Monster called Roaring Sea Snake. However, similar to every single one of the previous monsters I’ve improved—either by creating 2.0 versions of them when they were almost perfect but missing the physical elements and colors of their respective fusees, or by starting from scratch and creating entirely new Fusions when they discarded all the themes and overall attributes of the monsters used to make them—this was a case that clearly needed a full redesign. Even though Roaring Sea Snake was indeed a WATER-Attribute monster and an aquatic reptile like Hyosube, it completely ditched the mystical, golden, and lamp-related themes seen in Mystic Lamp. Thus, I needed to create a brand new Fusion Monster that would not only be faithful to both fusees, but also original at the same time.

Truth be told, this was one of the easiest Fusion Monsters I’ve created on my own, since I knew exactly what direction I wanted to go in for the new Fusion of Mystic Lamp and Hyosube. Throughout various Arabic legends, lamps—mostly golden ones—have been known to contain wish-granting genies, which obviously explains the mysterious magical powers they possess. The Hyosube are legendary Japanese sea monsters that live in underwater caves and are said to be close cousins of the Kappa due to their similar backstories, although there are some major differences. Unlike the Kappa, which resemble giant bipedal sea turtles, the Hyosube are far more humanlike, excessively hairy, sometimes bald-headed, and possess sharp teeth and claws well suited for combat. In other legends, Hyosube are said to bear an even stronger resemblance to their cousins, having blue scaly bodies, whereas Kappa are green.

Another major inspiration for the design of this new Fusion Monster was the symbolic importance of turtles in various East Asian legends. In ancient China, the turtle was viewed as a sacred symbol of longevity, immortality, health, strength, and power, which is why tortoise shells were used in ancient divination ceremonies during the Shang Dynasty. In Japanese legends, it is said that when a sea turtle reaches 100 years of age or more, it gains immortality, infinite wisdom, immense physical size, and the ability to see into the future. These concepts—combined with the sacred symbolism of magical lamps and the designs of various golden sea turtle statues—ultimately gave birth to the Divine Sea Turtle.

As the name of this new Fusion Monster implies, this titanic sea turtle is a divine sea creature whose powers are considered nearly god-like. The massive golden shell located on the creature’s back is made of pure gold, just like Mystic Lamp, while the mystical symbols engraved into it are altered versions of the ones seen on the lamp itself. Another notable feature of sea turtles in Japanese mythology is their long tails made of algae and seaweed, which symbolize extreme old age. These tails mirror the long beards of sages, representing wisdom gained through time. This is referenced by the dark green hair composed of algae and seaweed that the Divine Sea Turtle possesses, which is a recolored and enlarged version of the hair seen on top of Hyosube’s head. Since the Divine Sea Turtle was modeled after a real-life sea turtle, the humanoid body shape, arms, and legs of Hyosube were discarded and replaced with four gigantic flippers, while a beaked mouth was added, as real sea turtles possess beaks instead of regular mouths. One trait that magical lamps and mythical sea turtles share is the ability to emit magical smoke, which is also one of the many abilities this new Fusion Monster has at its disposal.

The physical elements that this gigantic sea turtle inherits from its fusees include the Mystic Lamp itself, which now forms the massive golden shell engraved with ancient symbols, and the blue skin and purple belly taken directly from Hyosube. As for newly added elements, the dark green hair and dark red eyes borrow their colors from Hyosube’s shell and tongue, respectively. The thick golden spheres embedded into the shell are present because Mystic Lamp features similar orbs, which I chose to incorporate and enlarge to better fit this new design. Another original addition is the shape of the Divine Sea Turtle’s four flippers, which do not resemble those of real sea turtles. Instead, they are modeled after anchors used on various ships, giving this colossal creature a more divine presence and additional destructive potential, as it can generate powerful oceanic disasters simply by moving its massive limbs through the water.

The Divine Sea Turtle is an ancient sea creature blessed with immense mystical power and wisdom, rivaled only by its unbelievable titanic size, which alone is enough to frighten any being who gazes upon it. Said to have existed for thousands of years, this colossal guardian of the ocean combines the sacred magic of the Mystic Lamp with the primal strength and aquatic nature of the legendary Hyosube. Its glowing red eyes allow it to see through the deepest and darkest regions of the sea, while its massive beaked mouth has become so thick and sharp that it can crush and reduce entire ships to scrap within seconds. Despite its intimidating stature and fearsome appearance, the Divine Sea Turtle is a kind and benevolent being that only uses its power and wisdom to guide and protect those who are pure of heart. Having lived for countless centuries, it has developed exceptional intelligence, the ability to speak human language, and mastery over many ancient magical arts. Its skin and golden shell are nearly impenetrable, rendering projectile weapons and most forms of energy attacks completely useless against this divine aquatic reptile. The shell upon its back, forged from pure gold like the Mystic Lamp itself and engraved with ancient symbols, radiates holy energy and allows the Divine Sea Turtle to unleash a powerful mystical smoke. This enchanted smoke grants wishes to those free of evil intentions, while immediately trapping evildoers within terrifying illusions that manifest their deepest fears—often leading to their inevitable demise. As both a sage and a guardian, the Divine Sea Turtle wanders the oceans as a living relic of forgotten eras, maintaining balance between the seas, the spirits, and the mortal world. The Divine Sea Turtle has all the aspects that originally came from Roaring Sea Snake.
