Undertale Ambiguous Gender Stamp by Dragonfly764 Undertale Ambiguous Gender Stamp by Dragonfly764
I've seen some people claiming that Frisk from undertale is absolutely 'non-binary' because they are called 'they' in-game.
They can be used as a pronoun for a person that you don't know the gender of, and I feel that declaring the character as definitely non-binary rather than ambiguous is reading too deeply into the 'issue.'

Especially when a good tool in storytelling is to leave things up to the reader/watcher/player's imagination, letting them draw their own conclusions, which I think is done pretty well in Undertale.

Frisk is a FRISK!!!

Well I see them as a chubby short boy who happens to be assigned male at birth but is non-binary nonetheless. Doesn't matter honestly. Frisk is whoever you see them as!

That's the WHOLE DAMN POINT of Undertale.
What you find canon is canon. It's meant to be interpretable. It's deliberately ambiguous because you create much (note I said much, not all) of the story through your own eyes. Characters genders? Motivations? Reason for the war? You decide how or why.

And still people push their headcanons as canon on others.
I wonder if some people are true fans if they miss the point.

this is my favorite thing that someone has said about Frisk.
mainly cause people are like
"ONLY FRISK CAN DECIDE!! CALL FRISK BY THEY/ THEM PRONOUNS!!!!1!!!!!!11!1!!"

ok but

Toby literally said that Frisks gender is whatever you want it to be
Frisk isnt real, so she cant decide lol

if you want Frisk to be a girl, sure <3
if you want Frisk to be a boy, sure <3
if you want Frisk to be literally any other gender, sure <3

my veiws are that its up to you, but please dont be a dick and try to shove your version of Frisk down my throat lol

My headcanon is that both Chara and Frisk shift into the player's gender.

In my art, I draw Chara and Frisk as girls, cause I am a girl. True, I use "they" pronoun for Frisk, but that's mostly to don't get people pissed.

frisk is canonically nonbinary, but your headcanon is valid! uwu <3 but just so you know, they're canonically nonbinary. so don't go around saying they're "ambiguous," it's just a headcanon!

when a character is notably called “they” by a game that doesn’t ask you if your character is a boy or a girl, that means the character is “they,” you don’t just get to opt out of canon and insist the whole “you can just decide that frisk is a bit or girl if you want!” thing is canon, and therefore actual IRL non binary people can’t be mad at you guys LOL

i can't find the direct link right now, but it's actually canon that frisk's gender is up to the player, as tweeted by toby fox
frisk is the player character, and is essentially supposed to be a blank slate for the player to insert themselves into, hence the non-gender specific appearance and name, blank face, lack of speech and race, etc.

that would make sense except for the way asriel refers to chara, who is kind of a "twin" to frisk... how could chara's best friend call chara "them", of all people i think toriel and asriel would know...

and besides, what is so upsetting to people about canon NB characters? ^_^;; people see "they/them" and assume "ACTUALLY this can be a boy or a girl if I don't like it!" as if NB gender is debatable in fiction...

chara isn't really a twin to frisk, chara was dead long before frisk even fell into the underground
personally, i don't know if chara is supposed to be nb or ambiguous, but all evidence points to frisk just being gender ambiguous

i'm not upset about people saying frisk is NB, i think anyone can think what they want! but it's important to realize that the fact is frisk is supposed to be you, the player, and can be whatever you want to be
there's no evidence in game that frisk has a set gender, so it's important to realize that no matter what gender you see them as, it's just an opinion and shouldn't be used to harass people

hence why twin was in quotes xD i know they aren't literally related, but the characters are tied together in a narratively significant way and look almost identical.

i think you're failing to understand this issue, though. the most logical assumption someone could make about someone with someone being referred to with they/them pronouns by their family members, who know them very well, is that they're nonbinary.

why is it that a character being nonbinary is immediately debatable? if this character was male or female, do you think this same crowd would be just as enthusiastic about defending everyone else's right to alternate interpretations?

if the experiences of thousands of people are to be believed, that wouldn't happen xD people are bullied online incessantly for having LGBT headcanons

whoops, missed that
(one thing you'll learn about me is that my attention to detail sucks, haha)

the issue here isn't that you and other believe frisk to be NB, (heck, that's my headcanon too!) the issue is that people are arguing about it, everyone believing that they're correct. it isn't that frisk being NB is debatable simply because they're NB, the problem is that it's been stated by toby fox that frisk is gender ambiguous. (I've dug through his whole twitter, trying to find the tweet, me and a bunch of other people swear we've seen it but it might have been deleted?)

the only problem i have here is that you're telling others that your headcanon is a fact (that came off really aggressive, not my intention but couldn't find a better way to phrase it) when, honestly your headcanon, my headcanon, everyone's headcanon is really just that, a headcanon

yeah, people are bullied for that and it isn't right, but so are people who see frisk as, say, a girl
the problem here is that everyone insists that they're correct when we're all correct (or incorrect, it goes either way)

i guess at the end of the day, i don't think both groups are the same at all - one group is choosing to interpret something they will be rewarded by society for [frisk is a boy or a girl because they're ambiguous!], and the other is choosing to interpret something they will be punished by society for. [frisk is nonbinary!].

and people being quite so eager to appease people with popular, coddled opinions just comes off unfortunate to me

I don't think that, as a whole, the community is doing it to please or appease anyone
I'm sure that there's some individuals who do so, but the vast majority just takes what they see and rolls with it
You certainly don't see very many fights about how old Frisk is, or what their race is (though again, I'm certain there's exceptions)

EDIT: Looking through these comments again, I do see a good chunk of people presenting a different opinion in order to appease others, namely referring to Frisk with they/them pronouns when their headcanons suggest otherwise. I feel like that's the problem surrounding Frisk's gender, that everyone's so set on a certain headcanon that things can get really heated

on an unrelated note, i like your art!

When I first read about the game, I thought Frisk and Chara were boys, since most adventure RPG games like Undertale force you to play as a male protagonist. When I actually played it, I saw them both as girls. A few months afterwards, I saw Frisk as a boy again for about a week, and after that, I changed my headcanon back to them being both female. Then I read a pretty convincing argument about how they canonically use they/them pronouns, and now I headcanon Frisk as androgynous and Chara as a demigirl. So yay!

It's up to the player to choose what gender they see Frisk as when they play the game. It's for immersion in the game. Otherwise Toby would have given Frisk a clear gender.

Doing otherwise would've been needless or pointless. If he had decided on Frisk as confirmed nonbinary he had ought to include it in the game. But since he did not then it's clear it's for immersive purposes.

I assumed Frisk was a girl before I learned about Frisk being ambiguously gendered, and still mostly see Frisk as a girl (I just can't picture Frisk as a guy in my head, or tall, I don't know why), but refer to Frisk mostly as "them" to avoid conflict.

It's probably because of their similarities to Chara. People see Chara as being more feminine than Frisk, yet the resemblance makes Frisk just as feminine somehow. I honestly don't know how that works? But... okay. I can understand why.

I honestly consider Frisk genderfluid.

Saaaaaame. I totally thought Frisk was a girl in the beginning. Even with the they/them pronouns being used I didn't know it was meant to be ambiguous or that people took it to mean Frisk is canonically non-binary. I just can't see her as a boy, especially with all the fan comics I've read, where even when the artists intended them to look gender-neutral they still looked more girly than boyish to me and the personality given to them always seemed to fit more with a girl than a boy. Plus there's also that the story of Undertale reminds me a lot of stuff like Alice in Wonderland, Coraline, and Spirited Away, all of which have girl protagonists.

And yeah I used to use they/them just to avoid conflict as well, but then I decided "man if people really care enough to argue with me about pronouns then they're not people really worth hiding from or arguing with". So I just use she/her (I do sometimes still lasp back to they/them just because I'm used to it sometimes). And actually, no one really ever gave me grief about it - so I guess people stopped caring as much? (Which is a good sign).
