Film Saphira by Dragon-Soul117 Film Saphira by Dragon-Soul117
This was my very first piece of Inheritance fan art, even if it is based on the film version. The scanner messed up on this unfortunately, and no amount of fiddling and rescanning was going to change it, but I still like it. I still can't understand why they thought putting feathers on Saphira was a good idea... Enjoy :)

Well then. WETA-digital that made the 3D models firstly made a Saphira that resembled a traditional dragon, with leathery wings and stuff.
But after some time the producer demanded a redo of her model. Then they decided to use the leathery feathers instead, because she looked too feral. They did this because of the simple fact that Saphira had to 'appeal' to the general audience. Sure, for people who love dragons this is a moot point. But then again, it's hollywood >_>
With the feathers and other little changes, like the fluffs of hair, Saphira was able to look more 'benevolent, if you can call it like that. It's not very easy to animate a 3D model and make it appealing to the audience at the same time ^-^
I don't know about my opinion really, because I saw the movie before I read the book. Simply because I didn't even know there were books about it.
But once I started reading my interpretation was a bit tainted by the film-Saphira ._.

Ugh, Hollywood will be the death of us... Yes, there was a poster that had the original Saphira on it... I can understand why they wanted to make her more more appealing, but weren't they making the movie for fans of the book who would understand that, on the outside, Saphira is a big ferocious dragon, but on the inside, she's really nice and warm to Eragon in particular? Also I saw the movie first too :3, or more accurately, the game first ;) I don't really have any hard feelings for the film, I just wish it was a "little" more accurate to the books. Rant over :D

I wish they didn't rush the character development. That's what killed it. There was a bit too much hurry in the movie.

Then again, making movies is not a cheap joke and in the end it's made to sell.
So yeah, they did have to safeguard their finances and play safe.
Otherwise, it's really rare to see a movie being made for fans in particular. Mostly some kind of director approaches a potentially good selling story and adapts it for the cinema.
However, with computer processing speeds climbing and climbing it gets easier to create 3D content for amateurs too.
So perhaps in some years we might see indie-people creating films.
But honestly, the best movie is still the one in your head while you're reading xD

I totally agree :) books are much better than films. And, I guess that's how Hollywood works, to make money. Then again, if you look how HTTYD turned out, that's nothing like the books, and is immensely successful, so I guess it depends.

Yeah, with httyd Dreamworks Animations redid the whole story themselves. Keeping the overall idea but being original in their own works too. The result is a movie that you could call, inspired by the book instead of copied.
But honestly I cannot blame them for choosing for a financially safe way. They need that capital to render all those scenes and stuff. (But sometimes it's just too cliché) Eragon is not a story made to be put in one movie really.
But honestly. Animation movies are really made up from blocks, code and data. To bring that alive, to the screens, really requires a lot of coordination and dedication. Between countless people. And well, it's never perfect, so decisions have to be made.
I mean, for example: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67…
It all starts with grey stuff that doesn't look real ^-^
But learning how those things are made is quite, interesting too. I'm trying to self-study it just because I'm curious.
(And totally because I want to mimic that too at some point in time ^-^)

I will look forward to it if you do :3 I agree that Eragon should have been put into more than one film. It could have been split in half, so that one movie told the story of Eragon finding Saphira, then perhaps up to a momentous event such as Brom's death :'(, then the next film carries it on. They could of at least made it an extended film... like two and a half hours long :D On another note, money always gets in the way of everything awesome...

You know. I'd actually do it. I'd want to spend years working on such a project with everything I have.
I wouldn't really care about getting paid either...standard living costs but other than that...
Perhaps, I first need to get my M.Sc. at the university xD So until then that will be something to daydream about.
