Clamface by dracontes Clamface by dracontes
I hear Deviantart is celebrating an anniversary and is consequently exhorting us, site users, to "find inspiration in abstract lines" for a community activity of sorts, a scribble challenge as they call it. I can't help be bemused at that since one of my go-to techniques when inspiration makes itself scarce is to lay down a few random squiggles and let pareidolia run its course.

So I decided to kill two birds with one stone as it were: I felt the exercise was welcome, but I wanted to do it on my own terms. Since I already had an usable squiggle on the *.docx file pertaining to Ramscoop Uneel Plays Dead, I split that out and started working. I did consciously avoid doing another serpentine shape. I also tried to develop the technique a bit more regarding line thickness variation. Having a notion of what you're doing certainly helps you keep things quick and painless.
A walktrough can be found here and more commentary on Facebook as well.

If you want to see in this as a more xenobiologically creative ET, feel free, as I myself was struck by the notion this concept would probably scare the bejesus of kids even more. I should then add that it's my impression a clamface's open mouth wouldn't be recommendable for the faint of heart. Still I'll leave to your imagination whether the alien's bucal cavity takes its cues from lampreys or from Lovecraft: depicting either of those options would probably take too long for my patience on Word.

Much obliged to Albertonykus for commentary and encouragement.

Done with the freeform shape tool via Wacom tablet and mouse on Word 2007. Cropping and *.jpg compression in Paintshop Pro 9.
