It was Twenty-five years ago Konami released one of the most unnoticed yet totally gonzo fighting games, "Kyukyoku Sentai Dadandarn" or "Monster Maulers" as it was known outside of Japan.
While Konami is known for many colorful arcade fighting games, Monster Maulers most captured the feel of a shlocky Sentai program. Right down to the theme song sung by veteran Sentai theme singer.
Monster Maulers' plot is a very simple one. A cabal of would-be world conquerors called the "Happy Droppers" send an assortment of special "kaiju eggs" down to Earth. The threats involve a brain monster, a temperamental centaur and a living rock moai. Witnessing the widespread chaos caused by the monster hatchlings, a prominent Japanese scientist summons three powerful heroes to form the "Dadandarn Squad" and orders them out to neautralize the monster's threat, then take down the Happy Droppers ringleaders themselves on their own starship.
A ROM for MAME can easily be found on the web. It simply HAS to be played to be believed. Video game wackiness at it's best.
