Serra Angel by DouglasShuler Serra Angel by DouglasShuler
Serra Angel is my most Iconic "Magic: The Gathering" card. Even though she's been repainted several times by other artists, I still receive dozens of the original cards to sign each week. When asked to create a new version of her for a playmat, I jumped at the chance to re-make the image with a wider angle.

It's all digital this time, and won't appear as a card... but after 20 years, she's still flying around my studio.

A beautiful angel indeed! And, an iconic Magic card for sure. I always thought the Serra Angel was cool in Magic, and this image is very well done, quite breathtakingly lovely, and suitably epic. Love the outfit she's wearing too! It is just so beautiful, feminine, and cute... but also elegant and well-suited for an angel character to be wearing. Great work! :)

This is beautiful.

I remember having this card when I played Magic a long time ago.  I gave it up when I got out of Magic and have regretted giving up that card ever since.  I've never seen it again, and was actually beginning to doubt if it was real or my imagination that none of the Serra Angels I've seen since didn't look right.

Now I know.  This is the first Serra Angel I played.  Thank you for letting me see her again.  :)

Thank you very much for drawing and bringing Serra Angel back from the days I've played "Magic the Gathering" 3rd edition her image to this day is still very iconic. I was hoping there was a full body drawn image of her of the 3rd edition card. But this shall do for now. Thank you again!

You should work with the guys at Inked playmats to turn some of your original art into playmats. Magic Artist RK Post (Morphling) has a bunch of his pieces as playmats there,

Maybe it's nostalgia, but i still prefer the original =D
Besides, you did a great work on basic lands, specially Mirage islands and Tempest forests, my favorites of all times (at least while i was playing, until 2001...)

It's simlply MAGNIFICENT Mr.Shuler!

I'm playing Magic the Gathering since 1994, and the Serra Angel is still one of my favourites!
I really hope to see a new draw for the Serra Angel, one that will keep alive that feeling of hope and beauty that was one of her best feature.

My thanks for your work.

Good to hear. I guess this piece has caused a little controversy as people claim it isn't the real Serra... but I'm not sure how that's possible since I did the first version. :)

That is amazing. I'm about to start doing some 3d Rendering. Time to bring my ideas to reality. Hope the world is ready. Your art is very inspiring by the way. I try to play magic through the eyes of the card's artist. Glad to see I was right.

Wow, that's one hell of an update! Serra was always one of my favorite cards, sadly I never could find an original :( But this is amazing stuff! Loved your artwork from the early days of MTG, and the work I see here blows me away. Very nice.

Thanks. Serra has been a favorite of mine as well, and after drawing her a thousand times, it seemed appropriate to do a color version.

Loving the great feel of texture of her dress and she looks so natural.
I probably would have liked more of a lustre on the sword. But hey that is such a minor detail on such a great piece of art.

Thank you :) I try very hard to stay away from stiffness (which isn't easy in 3D), and I know I don't always succeed. But having you notice grace gives me hope I'm getting there.

Wow, I'm actually suprised you responded. Most other 'big' artists don't do that normally.

Anyway, I love what you did with such a classic card. I love the change of costume! Personally, I play an Angel/Knight deck, and Serra Angel is a personal favorite of mine. If I see it, I will definatly buy it!

I just happen to be at the first convention where they were seeking artists - they hired almost everyone willing to work for an unknown game company (WoTC? who are they?). I was at the right place at the right time.
