Mental Health Awareness - Paint For Peace is today. The theme is actually "Inner Peace", but I wanted to do something a little more personal.
If you've been reading my posts for a while you are probably aware that I have hypothyroidism. The thyroid regulates hormones, and mine doesn't work. One of the symptoms is depression/anxiety and all sorts of other fun things.
My paint today represents one of the symptoms of an anxiety attack. There are all sorts of panic/anxiety attacks, and different levels. When they get really bad, my eye sight goes dark and I start to lose my vision. A black haze creeps into the corners and my sight goes blurry and dark. I see stars, and my hearing fades. It sounds like my head is underwater and I cannot understand what people are saying to me. It feels like an elephant is on my chest, and my knees give out and I can hardly stand.
While all this is happening, I am aware of it, and aware of the fact that people around me are staring, trying to interact with me, and I am unresponsive and can barely breathe. It is a terrifying experience, especially in a crowd. (These type mostly happen to me in crowds)
You never know when it might happen. I do pretty good regulating mine as long as I have a task at hand, something to do, a responsibility to focus on. Thankfully I've never had one at work, and I have only had one or two at bodypaint events after I was done painting and waiting for the runway/judging.
So.... be kind to everyone. You never know what people are going through. It's called an invisible illness for a reason. People get really good at hiding it. Due to the stigma people haven't talked about it in the past. But I want everyone to know that I got your back, I feel your struggle, and I'm here for you.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month #breakthestigma
