Description
Caulostomes are a class of stratozoan polizoans. In them the layered growth of the phylum is clearly appreciated, with each zooid emerging from the mouth of its parent.
They live in symbiosis with photosynthetic microorganisms that inhabit the skin of their zooids and give them a brownish coloration. All zooids have completely lost their digestive capacity.
Are very abundant and diverse and can be found in all marine ecosystems, although they thrive especially on the coast, where the action of waves and tides prevents the formation of reefs composed of hive sponges. Many species are present even in intertidal areas.
The genus in the image is about 7 cm tall and is part of the hive sponge reefs communities.
