Something was off.    Stone woke with a heavy feeling in her chest. It didn’t hurt necessarily, but it was so heavy and constricting she felt like it should be hurting. The dull pain that accompanied it seemed almost like an afterthought.    She felt both like herself and someone else entirely at the same time.    Opening her eyes, the world seemed washed out in bright lights. No matter how much she squinted to try to adjust her eyes they didn’t. Her breathing was labored. The entire world seemed to be only grayscale silhouettes that made outlines just familiar enough for her to identify though familiarity and not by s

A smarter person might realize that Forte was up to something. That while he seemed laid back, playing up his exhaustion, he had a distinct destination in mind. Stone was not that person.    She happily followed along, and asked no questions when Forte suggested they make a turn here or there. Her new friend was exploring with her so why would she be suspicious?    It didn’t take long for the pair to hit a dead end.    Stone saw where they were headed and was about to turn back when Forte raised a hand from where he was being carried.    “Now wait a moment,” the backs of his knuckles dropping back to barely touch

Even though the day had started in a blind rush of competitors charging down the road, the whole lot of them disbursed fairly quickly. Now it was just Stone and Oxalide left to wander down empty streets looking for doors. Once in a while they would see another person hurry past the end of a road or in to a building on their own search. No one really seemed to know what they were looking for other than a ‘hidden door’ that they would have to figure out how to open.     Judging by the sun it had been a couple of hours since the search had begun. The pair had swung wildly from thinking nothing was important to every little out

Stone looked up from where she had been trying to follow along on a page Oxalide was reading to her. This seemed to comprise a majority of ‘learning’ in the days they had passed waiting to be told they could proceed into the labyrinth. Stone didn’t mind, she got to sit close enough to Oxalide to bathe in the other woman’s smell. Flowery. Unsurprisingly.     Today, however, they were interrupted by a doorlet frolicking past them. As it bounded along it made little tooting sounds like it was imitating a trumpet. It paused in front of the two competitors, staring at them with its single huge eye and playing its song

Oxalide turned her petals to the noise, feeling the warmth of what sun peeked through the leaves on her mask. It seemed like so recently this place had known the joyous screams and laughter of children rushing through the mountainside town. In reality, the children had grown and left nearly two generations ago. The last human that had lived in Katsuk had passed last year; their child had come back to give a funeral but the forgotten town held nothing for them anymore and thus had returned to their new home.     Now all that remained

Day Four was quiet, except for a small child who had been startled by something and wound up backing in to Stone. At first Stone thought that girl was going to be scared and run from her as well, but after a moment she decided the abomination was the lesser of two evils and half hid behind her leg. Stone didn’t know who the girl was hiding from or why she suddenly felt so protective. She gently brought one massive hand around the child’s back in a sort of hug as she scanned the area for whatever was so threatening. With a tenderness that may have been surprising coming from such a large creature,  Stone scooped the girl up with

Day one, Coatl and Zol explained that she would not be permitted to roam the labyrinth for a few additional days while more people gathered. That it was to be a competition with a single winner. Stone had not been told that before hand, which left her feeling a bit unprepared. Bustling was an understatement for the Bazaar and they were still expecting more? She’d never seen so many bodies in one place, but she had only ever seen the Doctor.     She almost stepped on a small creature by mistake who immediately clambered up her leg and to her shoulder to scold her. He then introduced himself as “Sphinx” and announced he

The newly self-appointed Stone stopped in her tracks as a massive wall seemed to appear from nothing in front of her. She jerked her head to the side to look at Zol only to find that they had vanished just as the wall had appeared. The project’s pupils widened in surprise as she looked back and forth for her new friend. They had said they were her friend. Do friends vanish? Instead she turned her attention to the archway. It was very impressive now that no stone was missing from it. Stone. 59152 stopped, running a large hand over the cool stones of the archway tenderly. Stone. Just like her. She was Stone now. Three days ago she squinted as the ground rushed towards her before the auto deploy parachute activated after being air dropped above the world’s most lush rain forest. Two days ago she got scolded for enjoying a patch of sun for a little too long. Yesterday she spent most of the day walking in circles because the voice of the Doctor demanded it. LABYRINTH OCT  AUDITION  PART 4: THE COMPETITION They thought they might be going crazy. As the trio calmly made their way down the suspiciously cleared pathway within the forest, the environment around them began to evolve. The towering trees of the rozenich homeworld, with their meaty girths and colorful foliage, slowly molded into smaller, duller specimens that had never been documented before. The land was morphing around them, transporting them… elsewhere. Compared to everything that had been encountered that morning, it fit right in with top tier strangeness.   It was not all bad.
