21-Aug-2009OK I suppose I kind of lied about the video stuff...but I wouldn't really call this a "supplement," since probably the only people that would be able to learn from it would be people who wouldn't need it anyway. Still, if you want to see me making one of these...

Making of a crab: [link]

Just understand that it isn't a tutorial, since I had to speed it up huge amounts to fit it in a reasonable time. The one in the video has flippers for back legs because blue crabs are swimming crabs. =P

-------

Don't rush your pleats - if they turn out messy and uneven, the collapsing steps will not go well and the result will be very messy or impossible. When I fold this design from foil paper and don't use anything but the paper itself as a guide to form the grid, I spend over an hour on it (up to 1.5 usually, counting a couple minutes to cut out a usable square from tissue foil).

I'm calling this a pattern rather than instructions, since there are more crease pattern elements to it than there are step-by-step instructions. There's not much point in having step-by-step instructions for something like this, since the steps are complicated enough that, by the time a folder is advanced enough to be able to fold it, he/she will probably be able to understand the simpler box pleat crease patterns (which is really all this is). Additionally, most of the important steps must be done while the model is 3-D, meaning that it would be very difficult to diagram accurately or even in a way that is easily understood by the reader. If advanced folders would care to try it from these diagrams and let me know if anything is too ambiguous, I would apprecaite the info so I can add more detail where needed.

If you have not box pleated before, this is not a good first model to try with box pleating due to the strange 3-D folds. Try these first:

- Human pattern by Claudio Acuña Jimenez: [link] go to the origami tab and then the diagrams link at the bottom. This one uses concentric box pleating on a grid of 16 x 16

- Tree by Cu' Kim Ngok: [link] box pleating on a grid of 32 x 32, more difficult and similar to my crab.

If you need help folding from the pattern for my crab, I'll do my best to clear up any confusion, but I can't really provide a video or photo supplements for this one.

Usage Policy
If you follow my diagrams to create a crab and wish to post the result as artwork either here or elsewhere, please credit the design you used to create the model.
